Advantage Newcastle: We see Newcastle as favourites coming into this one, and for good reason. They have the better form, and despite what Sunderland may say, they also boast a higher calibre of player, regardless of how good the Black Cats were in the transfer window.

Coming away from Leverkusen was a creditable point to their name; the Newcastle squad will be feeling more positive than negative, and coming into such a hotly anticipated game, having a positive group mindset is essential. With momentum on their side, Newcastle should come away with at least a point.

Both Teams to Score: Both teams to score has landed in all of Newcastle’s last seven games across all competitions, while the same leg has seen success in all of Sunderland’s last four home fixtures.

Yes, it has failed to land in two of Sunderland’s last five, but in general, the Stadium of light has played host to some serious goalfests this season. In a high-stakes derby game with both sides looking to put pressure on the congested top six, we can see that pattern continuing.

Cards Galore: It’s the Tyne-Wear Derby - of course there are going to be cards. Known for its physical nature, the clash has been witness to numerous bad challenges, famous sendings-off and iconic clashes; this particular game is rarely played in good spirit.

Three of the last five meetings between the two have seen six or more cards shown - it’s certainly a risky leg, but if any fixture this season was predicted to have some poor discipline, it was this one.
