The start of the new year means the return of the FA Cup first round. The competiton that we all love, teams from non-league get the opportunity to upset the big dogs and make a name for themselves. Unfortunately this year only three teams outside the EFL have made it to the third round, with Macclesfield taking on the reiging champs Crystal Palace.
For Man Utd and Brighton, they'll be thinking they've drawn the short straw, having to take on a fellow Premier League side. This weekend we will see four all Premiership fixtures, with United and Brighton headlining. The fixture is the first between the two sides in the FA Cup since 2023, where United came out victorious on penalties at Wembley in the semi-final. United went onto the lift the cup this season and will be hoping this is the start of another successful FA Cup campaign.

Goals Goals Goals The last time these two sides faced off in the FA Cup the game ended 0-0, with United winning on pens to progress to the FA Cup final. That game was not short of chances, with 30 shots being exchanged between the two and Brighton's Robert Sanchez picking up Man of the Match. We believe it will be different this time around with both sides leaking goals in recent times. They've conceded a combined total of 12 goals in the last five games. Both sides have also picked up results in these games, scoring 12 in these five games. These stats lead us to believe it'll be a tight affair with the potential for an FA Cup classic with lots of goals.
Corners Galore Both sides sit midtable in the Premier League for corners won this season, with 198 between them. United average roughly 4.8 a game while Brighton average 4.67. This seasonal average hints that there will be over 9 corners between the two and we've backed as a banker, it makes sense for this to come in.
Mitoma Masterclass He's been a standout performer for Brighton since his arrival back in the summer of 2022. Although his stats don't jump out at you, he's very good at finding space in the pockets, creating chances and running at his man. He was very impressive last time out, netting the equaliser away at Man City in a 1-1 draw. He netted against United in this exact fixture back in January 2025 and could be set to do the same again.
Brighton upset Brighton have won three of their last five visits to Old Trafford, scoring 10 goals in doing so. They've struggled away from home in the league, but a win here could turn their season around and continue their fast start to 2026 that has seen them pick up four points in two games. United have Darren Fletcher in charge for the game and a disappointing draw away at Burnley showed that perhaps they are in a rough period and could struggle to pick up results.
2-1 Prediction It's never easy to guess the score, but 10 goals in five appearances at Old Trafford, Brighton average two goals everytime they visit, and we think this result could be the winner. United are low in morale, but have something to fight for, trying to impress the new interim gaffer. But it is United after all and a third round exit would be no shock after their loss to Grimsby in the Carabao Cup.
