After a lovely and enjoyable week for the players with no football and a whole load of food, we return to Premier League action this evening at Old Trafford where Manchester United welcome Newcastle United in the first and only topflight Boxing Day fixture. There are no doubt the players' stomachs will be mostly full after a day of chocolates and turkey, but hopefully the forwards still have room for goals - and if so, then this is sure to be a banker.
Since joining in a mammoth transfer deal in August, Nick Woltemade has impressed spectacularly well at St James' Park, netting seven goals in just 14 league appearances. The 6ft 6in German international has proven to be clinical with the chances he receives, netting his seven goals with just a 5.88 xG, proving his resourcefulness and efficiency in the final third.
Furthermore, he has managed to amass 26 shots this season, converting 11 of them on target, which may not look too strong at first glance. However, the Magpies are one of the stronger sides this season at producing shots on target and in a huge clash like this, he might just be able to make that step up and at least force a save out of Senne Lammens in goal.
As for the Red Devils, their weakness so far has proven to be in the defensive third, as they are ranked 7th and 6th respectively in terms of xG conceded and actual goals conceded this season, highlighting that weakness which could very well be exploited by Woltemade this evening.
Another reason why we are backing Woltemade to find the target is because of the current form both sides find themselves in heading into this game. Man United have conceded over 10 shots in four of their last five, only keeping the figure under 10 against Wolves, while they have even conceded in each of their last 10 matches.
Meanwhile, Newcastle have scored two goals or more in six of their last seven matches in all competitions, proving how lethal they have been in front of goal in recent weeks, while Woltemade is currently in some good form of his own, finding two tidy goals against Chelsea last time out.
Therefore, we are backing Woltemade to find a shot on target here.
