Chelsea vs PSG Predictions, Lineups and Betting Tips

Match Details: Sunday, August 13th | The MetLife Stadium, New York | Club World Cup Final

The final of the inaugural reformatted Club World Cup awaits us on Sunday, with the game set to be contested between champions of Europe Paris Saint-Germain and 2021 champions Chelsea.

Both sides have been solid throughout their campaigns - both tasted defeat to Brazilian sides in the group stages, but have since recovered their composure to dispatch of any competition throughout the knockout stages.

The two sides have an eventful recent history in Europe’s elite competition, playing each other six times between 2014 and 2016, but they have not met since that last clash, making it nine years since they last faced off.

Key Betting Tip: A draw after 90 minutes at odds of 4.10 represents excellent value for the tip [rovided by our in-house tipsters.

Chelsea vs PSG Predicted Lineups

Chelsea Predicted XI (4-3-3): Robert Sanchez (GK); Marc Cucurella, Levi Colwill, Trevoh Chalobah, Reece James; Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo, Andrey Santos; Pedro Neto, Joao Pedro, Cole Palmer.

Chelsea have seemed to get stronger as the tournament has gone on, their squad adjusting to the ruthlessly hot conditions and the international opposition. Enzo Fernandez, Pedro Neto, Moises Caicedo and Cole Palmer have been typically excellent, while new signings Liam Delap and Joao Pedro have settled in nicely, with both netting on the full debuts.

However, the Blues do have a couple of notable absentees: Another new signing, Jamie Bynoe-Gittens remains out through illness, while Benoit Badiashile, Omari Kellyman and Wesley Fofana remain out of the squad through respective injuries.

Moises Caicedo went off late with what seemed to be an ankle injury in their semi-final win over Fluminense, but reports suggest it is nothing major, indicating he could start the final.

PSG Predicted XI (4-3-3): Gianluigi Donnarumma (GK); Nuno Mendes, Willian Pacho, Marquinhos, Achraf Hakimi; Fabian Ruiz, Vitinha, Joao Neves; Khvicha Khvaratskhelia, Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue.

Currently the best team in the world, and getting stronger with every game that passes at the tournament, it is hard to pick a hole in PSG’s squad right now. Fabian Ruiz has been superb, metronomically dictating the game while also providing goals from midfield, while Ousmane Dembele and Khvaratskhelia have also had stellar tournaments.

Their 4-0 win over Real Madrid in the semi-finals personified their approach: relentless pressing, fabulously direct wing play, and ice-cold ruthlessness in front of goal. Most sides tend to go into their shells when facing Real Madrid - not Luis Enrique’s European champions. They took the game to the Spaniards, and were justly rewarded.

With a clean bill of health, Enrique will have his entire squad to pick from ahead of this game - if they play as they did in the semi-finals, they will out-match Chelsea in virtually every position.

Chelsea vs PSG Current League Standings

With both sides faced with over a month without competitive football upon the full time whistle here, players and staff alike will go away and enjoy a relatively short holiday before returning for pre-season a couple of weeks before their respective league campaigns get under way.

With neither Ligue 1 or the Premier League commencing until mid-August, both sides will be looking forward to some time off, escaping from the sweltering American heat.

Chelsea vs PSG Head to Head Timeline

Chelsea and PSG have faced each other a total of eight times since 2012, although all of these meetings came in a four year span. Over the course of this spell, Chelsea managed just one win, while PSG came away with four, meaning they hold the psychological advantage coming into this high stakes game.

Last Five Head to Head Meetings:

  • March 2016: Chelsea 1-2 PSG (Champions League Last 16 Second Leg)
  • Feb 2016: PSG 2-1 Chelsea (Champions League Last 16 First Leg)
  • July 2015: PSG 1-1p Chelsea (Champions Cup - N.American Friendly Tournament)
  • Mar 2015: Chelsea 2-2 PSG (Champions League Last 16 Second Leg)
  • Feb 2015: PSG 1-1 Chelsea (Champions League Last 16 First Leg)

Chelsea’s last victory against PSG over the course of 90 minutes actually came back in 2014, when they won 2-0 at Stamford Bridge to reach the UCL semi-finals. Super sub Demba Ba was the hero that night, netting a dramatic 87th minute winner to knock out the Parisians.

Since then, PSG have dominated proceedings, winning two and drawing two of the four competitive meetings since. Chelsea did manage a penalty victory in the 2015 Champions Cup, but as it was a friendly competition, the result holds no real weight.

Chelsea and PSG Recent Match Analysis

Chelsea’s Last Five Games:

  • Chelsea 2-0 Fluminense (Club World Cup Semi Final)
  • Chelsea 2-1 Palmeiras (Club World Cup Quarter Final)
  • Chelsea aet 4-1 Benfica (Club World Cup Last 16)
  • Chelsea 3-0 Esperance (Club World Cup Group Stage)
  • Chelsea 1-3 Flamengo (Club World Cup Group Stage)

When Chelsea lost to Flamengo in the group stage, the criticism directed at Enzo Maresca’s side sounded familiar - lack of creativity, slow and ponderous in the build up, and a side with poor discipline, thanks to Nicolas Jackson’s red card just four minutes after being subbed on.

Many thought that, going off that performance, Chelsea didn’t have a chance of making a deep run here. But they responded brilliantly; they took a predictably easy win over Esperance, and really showed their quality in their 4-1 over Benfica, a game which was delayed for more than three hours, and which should really have been over in 90 minutes.

Joao Pedro then arrived from Brighton and Hove Albion, and made an immediate impact - he made a useful cameo off the bench in the quarter-final win over Palmeiras and scored a sumptuous double against Fluminense, two goals which took Chelsea to the showpiece game.

Improving as the tournament has gone on, Chelsea have proved many people wrong by being one of the last two - they may have had an easy run to the final, but they didn’t ask Man City and Inter Milan to lose to Al-Hilal and Fluminense, did they?

PSG’s Last Five Games:

  • PSG 4-0 Real Madrid (Club World Cup Semi Final)
  • PSG 2-0 Bayern Munich (Club World Cup Quarter Final)
  • PSG 4-0 Inter Miami (Club World Cup Last 16)
  • PSG 2-0 Seattle Sounders (Club World Cup Group Stage)
  • PSG 0-1 Botafogo (Club World Cup Group Stage)

PSG’s story is very similar to Chelsea’s; defeated by a Brazilian side in their second group game, they have come back with a vengeance, and haven’t conceded in the four games since.

Comfortably dispatching of American duo Seattle Sounders and a Lionel Messi led Inter Miami, the Parisian’s dialled up their level in the quarter-final, outplaying German champions Bayern Munich in a game where goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma accidentally but severely injured German starlet Jamal Musiala.

However, they didn’t let that distract them - late goals from Doue and Dembele, despite red cards for both Willian Pacho and Lucas Hernandez, saw them ease into the semi’s. Against Real Madrid, in spite of their double suspensions, PSG were unplayable.

Ruiz and Dembele scored within the first 10 minutes, and Ruiz doubled his tally before the half hour mark. From there, it was an easy coast to the finish line, and substitute Goncalo Ramos made that journey that much sweeter with a 87th minute finish to put the result beyond doubt.

Chelsea vs PSG Betting Tip

Football Park’s Best Bet: Both sides to draw after 90 minutes - PSG are truly excellent, but showed throughout 2024/25 that chances can and do come for their opposition; Chelsea must be ready to capitalize.

Key Players to Watch: Chelsea vs PSG

Pedro Neto (Chelsea): Joint second in the scoring rankings with three goals, and Chelsea top scorer, Pedro Neto has shown what he is all about at this tournament. As fast as lightning, with feet equally as quick, he has been a defenders nightmare so far, beating with a combination of pace and quick thinking, while also showing a clinical edge in front of goal.

Ousmane Dembele (PSG): The favourite for the 2025 Ballon d’Or, Dembele has continued his red letter season at the Club World Cup, notching two goals in the knockout stages, as well as an assist. With his relentless pressing, outrageous skill, and his ability to drift all across the front line, it seems that every Chelsea defender will have their hands full.
