Flamengo lock horns with Espérance Tunis in the opening round of matches of the revamped FIFA Club World Cup. Both sides kick off their campaigns in Group D in Philadelphia at the Lincoln Financial Field Stadium.
The iconic Brazilian outfit, Flamengo come into the tournament as one of the stronger Brazilian sides, alongside Palmeiras. One of the world’s most supported clubs, the Brazilian giants will look to top a difficult group, and they qualified to the competition after winning the Copa Libertadores in 2022.
They take on Tunisia’s best in Espérance Tunis who dominated the North African country for the last decade. ES Tunis qualified for the competition via the CAF ranking pathway and are one of four CAF attendees.
As the game approaches, here is everything you need to know about both sides ahead of kick-off.
This clash between Boca Juniors and Benfica will take place at the Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia, on Tuesday, June 17, at 02:00 BST. This match will be available to watch for free on DAZN.
You will be able to catch this match through the DAZN App.
Flamengo Predicted Lineup (4-2-3-1): Rossi; Wesley, Ortiz, Pereira, Sandro; Gerson, E. Araujo; L. Araujo, Arrascaeta, Everton; Pedro.
The Brazilians currently sit top of a very tight Brazilian Serie A which sees four points separate first with seventh. They have also scraped through a very close Group C in the Copa Libertadores to secure a tie with Internacional in the round of 16 in August. Flamengo have won all of their past three games without conceding, while scoring 10. This run included a magnificent 2-0 away win against Palmeiras.
Flamengo have some excellent experience in this squad, with the likes of European experience in Alex Sandro and Champions League winner and Euros winner in Jorginho. Giorgian De Arrascaeta has enjoyed a brilliant start to the league campaign, scoring nine goals in the opening 11 games- he will certainly be one to watch during Flamengo’s run.
ES Tunis Predicted Lineup (4-3-3): Ben Said; Bouchniba, Jelassi, Tougai, Ben Hamida; Derbali, Ogbelu, Sasse; Jebali, Rodrigues, Belaili.
Since their narrow CAF Champions League exit to Sundowns, ES Tunis have won nine of their last 10 games. In this run they have conceded just twice and scored 23. They have comfortably scored the most in the league, with 57 in 30 matches, 12 higher than any team.
With nothing to lose, Tunis may play freely, which could give them opportunities. They will need to stay very disciplined, however, as all of their opponents possess much more quality and experience in big competitions (bar Enzo Maresca’s young Chelsea side).
Tuesday night will be the first time these sides lock horns, having operated in different continents and leagues, not meeting before in this competition either.
Benfica come into this game in very good form and will use their disappointing standings in both the league and cup competitions as fuel to steamroll into the round of 16. They are favourites to beat an inconsistent Boca side who have struggled recently to find the net.
