After successful group stage campaigns, European Champions Paris Saint-Germain and reigning MLS champions Inter Miami will slug it out in Atlanta, Georgia on Sunday, as Lionel Messi goes head to head with his former employers.
PSG emerged from their group as winners despite a shock defeat to Brazilian side Botafogo, while Inter Miami have been one of the feel-good stories of the tournament, going undefeated in Group A and beating Portuguese giants Porto in process.
As this intriguing knockout battle approaches, here is everything you need to know about both sides ahead of kick-off.
This game will be broadcasted on DAZN and Channel 5, with kick-off scheduled for 17:00 GMT on Sunday evening.
PSG Predicted Lineup (4-3-3): Gianluigi Donnarumma (GK); Nuno Mendes, Willian Pacho, Marquinhos, Achraf Hakimi; Fabian Ruiz, Vitinha, Joao Neves; Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue.
Despite making it out of Group B in first place, it was considerably less comfortable than Luis Enrique and PSG would have wished it to be. They finished tied on points with both Atletico Madrid and Botafogo, and got out only because of their dominating victory over the Spaniards on matchday one.
The Parisian’s were arguably the best side in Europe, and perhaps the world this season, but the heat and atmosphere of the America-based Club World Cup has perhaps prevented them from playing at their best. However, facing up against a side from the host nation, they will need to find their A-game here.
Of course, they are favourites, but with Messi, Suarez, Busquets and Alba on the opposing side, there is certainly room for an upset. However, their Champions League final clash serves as a reminder of their quality - PSG won the Champions League with a 5-0 rout, and that was against an Inter side too…
Inter Miami Predicted Lineup (4-4-2): Oscar Ustari (GK); Jordi Alba, Maximiliano Falcon, Ian Fray, Marcelo Weigandt; Telasco Segovia, Sergio Busquets, Benjamin Cremaschi, Tadeo Allende; Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez.
Outperforming the expectations of many, Inter Miami reaching the knockout stages was one of the more surprising outcomes of a chaotic group stage. Placed in arguably the least predictable group, the David Beckham owned side bested Porto and Al Ahly to progress through to the last 16 alongside Brazilian top dogs Palmeiras.
Though they drew against arguably the easiest opposition in the group, a 0-0 tie against Al Ahly in their first game, Miami found their level in their second fixture, as Messi scored a typically beautiful free kick on their way to a 2-1 win.
In the final game of the group stage, they let a 2-0 lead slip in the last 10 minutes and had to settle for another draw against Palmeiras, but it was enough to emerge from the group in a comfortable second place, and now they get to relish the prospect of taking on Europe’s finest.
Though Inter Miami undoubtedly have giant-killing potential, they will have wished for a kinder draw - Champions of Europe are a nightmare to play at the best of times, and if you have never played them before, and compete against teams of far inferior stature, you won’t stand a chance.
That is why our experts have decided that the best tip for this game is to back PSG to win. Odds of 1.18 on Kwiff mean that a £10 stake would return almost £2 in profit. A small, but safe bet.
PSG 3-1 Inter Miami
Though Inter Miami certainly pose a tough test, PSG have more than enough quality to put them to the sword - it seems that Messi’s reunion with his former club will be a bitter one.
