The CONCACAF Champions Cup sees sides from Canada, the USA, Mexico and the Caribbean come together to fight it out for North America’s premier continental competition. The nations bring sides from different leagues, and as a result, different levels of the game, which can lead to unexpected results. Playing conditions are diverse, ranging from sweltering heat to hurricane conditions, and unlike the Oceania equivalent, the tournament holds two-legged knockout fixtures, allowing for extra drama and second chances.
Participating clubs must qualify for the competition by competing in their national tournaments and leagues - typically, league and cup winners, as well as runners-up, are eligible, although Central American sides such as those from Nicaragua, Honduras and Panama can only qualify through the Central American Cup. Once the bracket is filled, the tournament moves straight into the knockout stages, with 22 teams in the first round being cut all the way down to two in the final across five rounds. The winner of the tournament qualifies for the Club World Cup.
Though specific dates are hard to come by in the months leading up to the tournament, we know the first round always kicks off in late February and runs into early March. The second round takes place later on in March, and the quarter-finals get under way in April. The semi-finals take place on the April/May border, and the final is typically held around the end of May, and sometimes at the start of June.
No specific date has been released for this years Cup final, but we do know that as discussed above, it will be held either at the end of May or at the beginning of June.
The tournament is shown on national TV stations in all participating countries. The USA shows games live on FS1 or FS2, and they can be streamed on Fox Sports and FUBO TV. Mexico broadcasts the games through Tubi, and Canada shows them on OneSoccer. For the rest of the Latin American and Caribbean clubs taking part, they can find their sides competing on Disney+.
Mexico’s Club America sit atop the standings, having won the competition a record seven times, and Cruz Azul ensure a Mexico one-two, with six titles to their name. In fact, the top six most frequent winners are all Mexican - Monterrey and Pachuca have five apiece, C.F. Atlante are three-time champions, and UNAM sit alongside them on the same number. The first non-Mexican side in the standings is surprisingly Deportivo Saprissa, the Costa Rican giants, who also have three titles to their name. Columbus Crew of the USA were the winners in 2025, just the second side for the United States to win the tournament.
