The Coupe de France, known in English as the French Cup, is the more major of two major knockout domestic trophies available in French football. It comprises of an almighty 14 different rounds of football, with local lower-league sides starting the tournament off as bigger teams from higher leagues join the tournament as time goes by. From minnows on cup runs to dominant French powerhouses, the Coupe de France has it all!
The Coupe de France begins with teams from district and regional leagues doing battle over the first two rounds. These teams will only be drawn against other teams from within their region of France. As each round goes by from Round Three onwards, teams from higher-up divisions will gradually be introduced, until top-flight teams from Ligue 1 join the competition at the Round of 64 stage.
The Coupe de France normally plays out over the course of an entire domestic season in France, with the opening rounds beginning around August, and the final normally being carried out in May. The tournament opens with regional teams for the first two rounds, with National 3, National 2 and National teams joining for rounds 3, 4 and 5 respectively. Ligue 2 teams enter in the seventh round of the contest, and top-flight teams from Ligue 1 join in the contest at the round of 64 stage.
France TV and Eurosport currently hold the broadcasting rights for the Coupe de France domestically, whilst the final has been co-aired on France 2 since 1975.
PSG have won the Coupe de France on the most occasions, winning the competition 16 times. The current title holders are PSG, who won the 2024/25 instalment of the competition.
