Match Details: July 18th, 2025 | Energi Viborg Arena, Viborg | Superligaen Opening Day
Reigning champions FC Copenhagen start their title defence on Friday evening as they travel to Viborg, who despite finishing in the relegation group last season had a high enough points tally to finish in the top half.
Winning the title for the 16th time since 1993 last season, Copenhagen once again stamped their dominance on the Danish Superligaen, and it looks as if it is going to take a monumental Viborg effort to cause an opening day shock.
Key Betting Tip: Both sides to be drawing at half time, at odds of 2.28, represent excellent value for the tip provided by our in-house tipsters.
Viborg Predicted XI (4-3-3): Oscar Hedvall (GK); Srdjan Kuzmic, Ivan Nasberg, Daniel Anyembe, Hjalte Bidstrup; Thomas Jorgensen, Mads Sondergaard, Jakob Vester; Serginho, Dorian Hanza, Yonis Njoh.
After a solid mid-table finish last campaign, Viborg have added some serious attacking depth to their side in a bid to push themselves up the standings. 21-year-old Yonis Njoh had made his loan permanent after a successful half season at the club last campaign, while striker Dorian Hanza also joins from Marbella to provide regular goals up top.
But it was not in front of the opposition goal where Viborg struggled last season - instead, it was in front of their own net. Conceding 50 goals across the league season, only four sides conceded more - even relegated Lyngby conceded fewer.
FC Copenhagen Predicted XI (4-4-2): Nathan Trott (GK); Marcos Lopez, Pantelis Hatzidiakos, Gabriel Periera, Rodrigo Huescas; Elias Achouri, Thomas Delaney, Victor Froholdt, Jordan Larsson; Mohamed Elyounoussi, Youssoufa Moukoko.
Though they have lost Roony Bardghji, whose potential was always going to lead to an exit, FC Copenhagen still have plenty of exciting young talent to aid their cause, chief amongst these being former Borussia Dortmund wonderkid Youssoufa Moukoko, who signed for the Danish champions this summer.
And there are plenty of other recognisable names in the squad - Andreas Cornelius, Elyounoussi, Thomas Delaney and Runar Alex Runarsson have all played roles and big European clubs, underlining that the depth throughout Copenhagen’s squad is like few others in the division.
Friday’s clash between Viborg and FC Copenhagen is set to be the opening fixture of the Superligaen season. As a result, with no games yet played, both sides sit level with the rest of their competitors on 0 points.
FC Copenhagen have absolutely dominated this fixture over the last decade or so, winning 14 of the 22 meetings between the sides since 2013. However, in recent times, Viborg have become a much more competitive side, and have won two of their last five meetings.
Last Five Head to Head Meetings:
Copenhagen have had the majority of recent success, winning both legs of their Danish Cup fixture in May 1-0. A Jordan Larsson goal was enough to seal the first leg, while Lukas Lerager grabbed the goal in the second.
However, Viborg also grabbed their most recent win in this fixture this year, in a breathless, end to end affair that finished 3-2. Copenhagen led 2-0 four minutes before the break, but three goals in 18 minutes after half time ensured Viborg grabbed all three points.
Viborg’s Last Five Matches:
With two pre-season friendlies under their belt, Viborg will be looking to carry the momentum they had at the back end of last season into the new campaign. They lost just one of their last 13 league fixtures in 2024/25, and if they can continue that run into this campaign, they could well be in the European football conversation.
However, a pre-season friendly loss to Randers FC, who finished fourth last season, showed that Viborg still have a little bit of ground to cover if they are to close the gap to the top four or five teams.
FC Copenhagen’s Last Five Matches:
Unbeaten since April, a streak which includes friendly games, Copenhagen are once again shaping up to be an enviable rival ahead of the 2025/26 season. Their squad is better than any other side, and they have one of the most exciting young managers in Europe in 37-year-old Jacob Neestrup.
However, across their three pre-season friendlies, they only found the net twice - of course, there is only so much information you can pick up from an uncompetitive game, but goals were Copenhagen’s standout strength last season, and they could have a real uphill battle if those start to dry up.
Our advanced algorithm has analyzed over 200 data points, and has predicted that after a tight first half struggle, Copenhagen will hit their stride, opening their season with a challenging but hard fought 3-1 victory. This model factors in current form, head to head records, player availability and tactical matchups.
Football Park’s Best Bet: A draw at half time is a sensible bet here - no side averaged more than two goals per game last season, meaning that most sides struggle to pull away from their opponents in the first period.
Serginho (Viborg): Undoubtedly Viborg’s best player last season, and arguably the best creator in the league across the campaign, Cape Verde international Serginho was at the heart of everything good Viborg did. Netting six goals and setting up a staggering 14 assists in just his second season at the club, Viborg fans are expecting even better from the right winger, who is still just 24.
Mohamed Elyounoussi (FC Copenhagen): Netting eight times in the Superligaen last campaign, Elyounoussi was the club's joint top goal scorer alongside winger Jordan Larsson. But he was also an excellent link up player, and his seven league assists indicate that the former Southampton man is becoming a complete striker in his spell in the Danish capital.
