The English Championship is often referred to as one of the most physical and competitive leagues in all of world football. With the race for promotion to the English Premier League on the line at the top of the table, and relegation to the infamously difficult League One awaiting at the bottom, England’s second tier is a melting pot of betting opportunities.
The Championship is made up of 24 different teams, who will face off against every other team in the division on two occasions - once at home, and once away. The team who finishes in 1st after 46 matches will win the league and promotion to the Premier League, as well as the team who finishes 2nd, though they win no trophy along with their promotion. The teams who finish from 3rd to 6th in the table will face off in a playoff system - a two-legged knockout semi-final and a one-match showdown at Wembley Stadium. The winner wins the playoff trophy and promotion as the third team into the Premier League. Teams who finish from 22nd to 24th are relegated to League One.
The 25/26 Championship season began on the 8th of August 2025, and will finish on the 2nd of May 2026. The play-offs for promotion normally begin at least a week after the final league games of the season, with the final held at the end of May though a specific date has not yet been confirmed.
Championship games are broadcast through many different media outlets. Choice fixtures are normally available to watch on Sky Sports Football and Sky Sports Main Event, whilst livestreaming services can often be found through paid subscriptions to club media channels for games that are not on live TV, and do not take place on Saturday’s at 3pm.
Leicester City have won the second division of English football on the most occasions, finishing in first place on eight separate occasions. The current title holders are Leeds United, who won the 2024/25 campaign.
