The Dutch top flight has proved to be one of the most underrated leagues in Europe in recent seasons - a very attacking minded league originally influenced by the likes of Johan Cruyff, even the mid-table sides come forward with no shortage of offensive intent, meaning high scoring games are relatively common.
It is also a league which has a heavy youth-development focus - countless young Dutch players seem to emerge from the Eredivisie conveyor belt every season, and the youth amongst many of the sides in the league can add variance to results - inexperience and hostile away atmospheres can be a young teams downfall.
The downside to focusing on youth development is that some sides see their squads pillaged in the transfer window by larger clubs looking for up-and-coming talent. This introduces high variability in the strength of each squad, and performance levels can alter dramatically before and after a transfer window.
The Dutch Eredivisie is made up of 18 sides, who play each other twice across a season (one home, one away) - in total, each side plays 34 four games across the regular league season.
Remarkably, the top eight spots are European qualification spots: the top two automatically qualify for the league phase of the Champions League, while third place must go through the qualifying rounds to join them. Fourth place earns a spot in the Europa League qualifying rounds, and fifth to eighth qualify for the same stage of the Conference League.
In terms of relegation, the bottom three teams at the end of the 2025/26 season will be demoted to the second tier.
Like many leagues across Europe, the Eredivisie takes place from mid-August to late May, with the competition put on hold during the international breaks that take place in September, October, November and March.
In the UK and Ireland, Eredivisie football is available to watch on Thriller TV+, while in other European territories, games are available on channels such as SportDigital and various ESPN sub-channels.
The Eredivisie title has historically been dominated by Ajax Amsterdam and PSV Eindhoven - Ajax have 28 to their name, the most recent coming in 2022, while PSV have 23, after winning the title in dramatic fashion last season.
Outside of these two giants, Feyenoord boast the most titles, with their eleven less than half PSV’s.
