After a summer of waiting, Liga MX 2025/26, Mexico’s answer to the Premier League, kicks-off in earnest, with 18 clubs looking to be crowned kings of central America.
With all 16 sides competing in the first gameweek of the season over the course of this weekend, Leon and San Luis will close out proceedings, with both sides looking to make a positive start to the new campaign.
Key Betting Tip: Club Leon to win at odds of 1.54 represent excellent value for the tip provided by our in-house tipsters.
Club Leon Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Alfonso Blanco (GK); Salvador Reyes, Rodrigo Echeverria, Stiven Barreiro, Edgar Guerra; Andres Guardado, Nicolas Fonseca; Steven Mendoza, James Rodriguez, Ivan Moreno; Jhonder Cadiz.
Having signed former Monaco, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich star James Rodriguez in January of this year, Club Leon will suddenly have a much brighter outlook heading into the new season.
They finished 11th last season, their lowest finish since 2019, and will be looking to complete a rebuild this season, in order to arrest their current downward trend - looking at the squad, there is more than enough ability to do exactly that.
Both Rodriguez and Guardado have La Liga experience, while others, such as Jhonder Cadiz and Emiliano Rigoni also boast top European League experience, a trait vital to success in Liga MX.
San Luis Predicted XI (3-4-3): Andres Sanchez (GK); Eduardo Aguila, Julio Dominguez; Juan Sanabria, Rodrigo Dourado, Oscar Macias, Roman Torres; Sebastien Salles-Lamonge, Leo Bonatini, Vitinho.
Similar to Club Leon, plenty of San Luis’ squad were outsourced from European sides, with domestic Mexican talent never enough to hand a team a shot at a title run.
As a result, Leo Bonatini, Joao Pedro Galvao, Frank Boli and Mateo Klimowicz have all been brought in for their big league knowledge, and that is just in the attacking department. San Luis have excellent depth, hence their sixth placed finish last season, and know they have more than enough talent to finish higher in 2025/26.
With the season kicking off on Friday night, three Liga MX fixtures have already been played - Atlas and Tijuana both one their respective games, and sit joint top, while Club America and Juarez opened their campaign with a draw.
With Club Leon and San Luis yet to play, they both sit on zero points, in fifth and tenth respectively.
Club Leon have a vastly superior record against San Luis over the last decade or so, winning 11 meetings between the two sides compared to San Luis’ five.
Last Five Head to Head Meetings:
Club Leon also boast the Psychological advantage ahead of this game after winning the last three meetings between the two sides, the most recent of which they clinched in the 87th minute through Paul Bellon.
To find San Luis’ last victory over Leon, we must go back to 2023 to find a thrilling 3-2 victory, which saw three first half goals, two second half goals, an own goal and a flurry of late chances that could have changed the scoreboard even further.
Club Leon’s Last Five Games:
Unfortunately removed from the Club World Cup due to multi-ownership rules, Club Leon’s end to the season can be considered a failure from every standpoint.
Losing their last four league and play-off games hurt them enough already, but to be removed from Group E, and in the process be deprived of clashes with Chelsea, Flamengo and Esperance, was upsetting on a whole different level, with fans upset at missing out on games with such world renowned opponents.
Replaced by LAFC, it remains to be seen whether Leon would have impacted the group in any way. Their recent form had been poor, and there was no guarantee they could push any of the sides in that Club World Cup group - perhaps it was for the best that they were removed.
San Luis’ Last Five Games:
Winning three of their last five, San Luis will have much more confidence than their opponents heading into their season opener - though they could only finish 15th last season, their level at the end of last campaign suggested that a much higher finish could be on the cards for 2025/26.
Though they cannot boast the globally recognised stars that Club Leon do, they can boast a unit that is very familiar with each other, a side who present excellent chemistry every time they take to the pitch. With teamwork so important in a league which takes place at high altitude (bringing heavy fatigue into play), teams who rely on each other tend to do better than those stacked with individual talent.
Our advanced algorithm has analyzed over 200 data points to predict that the clash between Club Leon and San Luis will end 3-1 in favour of the home side. The model factors in current form, head to head records, player availability and tactical matchups.
Football Park’s Best Bet: Club Leon to Win - With a favourable head to head record, and a squad with more than a few recognisable names, Club Leon should have more than sufficient quality to take all three points.
James Rodriguez (Club Leon): The definition of a coup when his signing was announced in January, Rodriguez has thrived since his move to Mexico. Though he has only netted twice, last year's Copa America player of the tournament has laid on a further six assists, illustrating his complete attacking play perfectly. He will be the key to unlocking the San Luis backline here.
Sebastien Lamonge (San Luis): Though not a striker, Lamonge was San Luis’ chief goal scoring threat for the large majority of last season, netting 12 league goals in all, while also setting up three more from his left wing role. Though capable of playing central midfield and even as a deep lying defensive player, Lamonge is at his most effective when running at a full back down the left - Edgar Guerra will have his hands full on Monday.
Referee: Abraham de Jesus Quirarte Contreras (MEX).
Stadium Details: The Estadio Leon, also unofficially known as the Nou Camp, has a capacity of 31 ‘297, and is the home ground of Club Leon. The arena has hosted games at the 1970 and 1986 World Cup’s, and is known for its superb facilities and excellent location.
