Portugal and Spain have a chance of some international success this weekend as the two nations go head to head in the UEFA Nations League final. Spain secured their spot in the final after their nervy win against France, and will now travel to Germany to play Portugal in the Allianz Arena, the home of Bayern Munich. The game will be on Sunday 8th June, kicking off at 8PM BST, with UK viewers able to stream the match via ITVX and ITV1.
Portugal haven't kept a clean sheet in five matches.
Spain also haven't kept a clean sheet in five matches.
Spain are unbeaten in 21 matches.
Portugal have scored 13 goals in their last five matches.
Currently ranked seventh in FIFA world rankings, Portugal will be hoping for a successful Sunday in the Nations League final. Despite their issues in defence, not keeping a clean sheet in five matches, the side face no struggles in scoring goals, with 13 from their last five matches.
It is of course no surprise that the man himself Cristiano Ronaldo is top scorer in the Nations League for Portugal, scoring seven goals for his country, five more than any other of his teammates.
Portugal Predicted Lineup: Costa; Mendes. Inacio, Dias, Neves, Silva, Neves; Neto, Fernandes, Trincao; Ronaldo.
Spain are arguably the best country in the world at the moment, being current holders of the Euros, whilst also not losing in over a year. Boasting top young talent like Lamine Yamal, it is tough to see how they don't win this matchup against Portugal.
Spain have scored 15 in their last five games, with Lamine Yamal and Mikel Oyarzabal being joint top scorers for their country in the competition with three goals each.
Spain Predicted Lineup: Simon; Cucurella, Huijsen, Le Normand, Porro; Merino, Zubimendi, Gonzalez; Oyarzabal, Williams, Yamal.
Portugal have always seemed to struggle when going up against Spain, with the former not winning a game since 2010. In recent years, whilst Portugal have struggled to win, Spain have also struggled themselves, with games usually ending in draws, apart from their most recent game when Spain scraped a 1-0 win.
27th September 2022- Portugal 0-1 Spain
2nd June 2022- Spain 1-1 Portugal
4th June 2021- Spain 0-0 Portugal
7th October 2020- Portugal 0-0 Spain
15th June 2018- Portugal 3-3 Spain
Considering how tight the game is when these two play each other, predicting a winner out of the two will be a tough ask. Whilst Spain may be considered the best in the World, the head to head record and the strong recent form of Portugal makes this game tighter than it may look. Therefore, predicting on both sides to score could be better, considering the strong attacks of both sides, goals will be guaranteed from both.
Spain are a very strong side, and whilst Portugal also possess a lot of quality, they will struggle to compete.
Spain have talent all over the pitch, and with fast runners like Nico Williams and the talent of Lamine Yamal, a win for Portugal doesn't look realistic.
Portugal do have a good side, but I don't think they have enough in comparison to Spain, which is why I think Spain win 2-1.
