The Serbian Superliga started in 2006 when the old Serbia-Montenegro competition broke up, it’s now the top level of pro soccer in Serbia. 16 teams play, scattered from one end of the nation to the other, from Red Star's classic ground in Belgrade all the way down to Čair pitch in Niš.
The real deal? the never-ending rivalry match known as the Eternal Derby: Red Star versus Partizan, both from Belgrade. A clash deeper than just sport, built on years of clashing politics, culture, and competition. These games are more than the game, they're moments a whole nation lives through.
The season rolls out in two parts. Right off, there's the regular run, every one of the 16 squads takes on 30 games, squaring up against each rival twice. After that, things split apart. The upper half, eight strong, goes into the Championship round, battling it out for trophies and spots in Europe.
Meanwhile, the lower bunch heads into the Relegation round, where staying afloat matters more than anything else. Whoever finishes first gets into the Champions League prelims, whereas teams in second or third go for Europa and Conference spots instead. Bottom two drop down to Serbia's lower tier. No mercy there.
The Serbian Superliga starts around July and goes on until near the end of May. After the first part ends in early March, the division splits right away. April into May is when things get real and championships settle. The big Belgrade clash usually happens two times before the split, then again during the title race phase.
Arena Sports' got the games locked down, airing them through Serbia and around the Balkan area. If you're watching from abroad, check out SportKlub or Match TV. Need live scores, details, or behind-the-scenes stuff? Football Park is the best place for all that. We keep you glued to every moment, start right up until the last call of the match.
No matter if you're chilling in Lagos, wandering London, hanging in Belgrade, or grabbing coffee in Boston, the Superliga’s only a tap away.
Red Star Belgrade sits on top with 10 Superliga wins since 2006, including last season's title, and more than 30 league titles if you add up the old Yugoslav days. Close behind comes Partizan Belgrade, holding 8 modern-era crowns instead.
For years now, these two clubs have called the shots in Serbia’s football scene, launching careers of players such as Aleksandar Kolarov, Dušan Tadić, even Sergej Milinković-Savić along the way. Yet here's a twist, could Čukarički shake things up? What about TSC Bačka Topola or Vojvodina challenging the norm? Is it time for someone else to finally grab the crown?
