Here we go. No more waiting. THE showpiece game of the European football season, the Champion League final, will kick-off on Saturday evening, with so much on the line, and so many storylines to tell.
Inter Milan will be aiming to capitalize on a two-legged semi-final classic against Barcelona, an astonishing tie which ended 7-6 on aggregate, in order to regain the title of Europe’s elite, having come so close two years ago in their narrow final defeat to Manchester City.
For their opponents, French heavyweights Paris Saint-Germain, this is the closest they have ever come to making their inevitable European breakthrough. They reached the final in 2020, losing to Bayern Munich, but return to this year's final with a complete squad, short on individuals but big on team cohesion and talent.
As the biggest game of the European season approaches, here is everything you need to know about the Champions League finalists.
This game will be covered across a range of channels, including on Discovery+ and TNT Sports 1, with kick-off set for 20:00 on Saturday evening.
PSG Predicted Lineup (4-3-3): Gianluigi Donnarumma (GK); Nuno Mendes, Willian Pacho, Marquinhos, Achraf Hakimi; Fabian Ruiz, Vitinha, Joao Neves; Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue.
Ever since the knock-out stages began, PSG have been firm favourites to go all the way. Many predicted early that it would be a Barcelona vs PSG final, with the two sides streets ahead of their competitors, but Inter threw a spanner in the works with a late show to rival all late shows.
Playing PSG may actually be a more uncomfortable experience for PSG - they are a team who like high turnovers and end to end games, both of which Inter try to avoid at all costs. They are a disciplined side and don’t tend to get drawn into firefights.
This means that PSG will need a plan B all the way through to Z if they are to break down Inter. Not only are they rigid and difficult to break down, they also showed that they can go end to end in the game with Barcelona.
However, form and pedigree are certainly on the French team's side. They have so far won the Ligue 1, Trophée des Champions and the Coupe de France, meaning one more win on Saturday night would complete an unprecedented French quadruple. And let me tell you, a team can’t achieve that by solely using plan A.
Inter Milan Predicted Lineup (3-5-2): Yann Sommer (GK); Alessandro Bastoni, Francesco Acerbi, Stefan De Vrij; Federico Di Marco, Davide Frattesi, Hakan Calhanoglu, Nicolo Barella, Denzel Dumfries; Marcus Thuram, Lautaro Martinez.
Despite the Serie A title falling away at the final hurdle, one can argue that Inter’s primary focus has been on the Champions League for the last couple of months, and results against Bayern Munich and of course Barcelona certainly lend themselves to that argument.
Their main motivation heading into this game will be avenging their agonising loss in the 2023 final. In fact, nine of the eleven players named in the starting eleven two years ago remain regular first teamers today, and many will remember the extremely bitter taste left in their mouths after 2024 Ballon d’Or winner Rodri’s first half goal was enough to sink them.
However, this year they take on their hardest opposition yet - PSG may not have Messi, Mbappe or Neymar any more, but their up and coming group of youngsters, by former Barcelona man Dembele, is squad of exceptional talent and immense promise, and the UCL final could be their coming of age moment.
But Inter have a very experienced squad - the youngest player in the predicted lineup is 25 - and this will help to counteract PSG’s youthful exuberance. It will be a game of old heads against young, and while talent-wise PSG have it on paper, next to no-one can out-strategise Inter Milan and Simone Inzaghi.
Though the two sides have never faced each other in a competitive setting, they have played each other in a number of friendlies, listed below:
While recent Champions League finals have been somewhat disappointing - four of the last five have ended 1-0 - but this one seems just a little different.
PSG are constantly hungry for goals, and while Inter would prefer to sit back and guard a one goal lead, they are more than capable of bagging two or three themselves.
That is why our experts have decided that the best tip for this game is to back both teams to score and a draw after full time. Odds of 5.59 on Highbet mean that a £10 bet will return almost £56 should the bet come off.
PSG 3-2 Inter Milan AET
Though they are very evenly matched, PSG are the slight favourites thanks to their extraordinary goal record and substantial trophy haul this season.
Inter are missing Benjamin Pavard, Piotr Zielinski, Yann Bisseck and Valentin Carboni, while PSG will only be missing Presnel Kimpembe. These injuries, combined perhaps with a hangover from losing the Serie A title on the final day, will see Inter pipped to the post, as PSG claim their first ever European title.
