As this weekend brings us the Nations League A final, we also get to witness the third-place playoff between the two semi-final losers. This features Germany, who will take on France at the MHPArena in Stuttgart on Sunday. The winners will be awarded a bronze medal for the international tournament.
You could not fault Germany in the Nations League up until their disappointing semi-final defeat. DFB-Team made it all the way up to the semi without losing a single match, storming their way through the group stages especially. In Group 3, they scored 17 goals in six matches, with impressive score-lines of 5-0 and 7-0 against Hungary and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The scoring did nit stop there either, Germany put five goals past Italy over two legs in the quarterfinals, emerging as 5-4 winners on aggregate to see them through to the semis. However, ultimately Julian Nagelsmann’s outfit fell short this week in the semifinal against Portugal. After they took the lead through Florian Wirtz, midway through the second half, they were dismantled by two successive Portugal goals to lose the affair.
France, on the other hand, have experienced a few bumps on the road through their Nations League journey. Les Bleus lost their opening group stage match in the competition against Italy. However, they soon picked up the form, winning every game in Group 2 from then on, except from a 0-0 draw to Israel back in November. After scoring 12 goals in their group, they got off to the worst possible start to the quarterfinals. In the first leg against Croatia, Didier Deschamps men were held to a 2-0 defeat in Split, giving them some distance to climb back at home. But then, a second leg comeback saw France sneak two goals back, taking it to penalties which they ended up winning. However, it was all for nothing, as an unfortunate 5-4 scoreline in the semifinal this week saw France lose to Spain to deny them of the final.
Germany Predicted Line-Up: Ter Stegen, Tay, Koch, Anton, Mittelstaedt, Goretzka, Pavlovic, Kimmich, Wirtz, Sané, Füllkrug
Florian Wirtz has been on fire for Germany in the Nations League this campaign. The midfielder has tallied up four goals and three assists in the competition, marking him as the nation's top scorer. The 22-year-old also opened the scoring in the semifinal against Portugal. There is no surprise that clubs such as Liverpool are interested in the youngster.
France Predicted Line-Up: Maignan, T. Hernández, L. Hernández, Konaté, Gusto, Rabiot, Koné, Doué, Olise, Dembélé, Mbappe
There is no France without Kylian Mbappe. Although the superstar has not featured too much throughout the Nations League, he is a player who can pull out a goal from anywhere. The game against Spain this week demonstrated that. Despite France coming extremely unlucky in the match, Mbappe managed to find the net once and grab an assist.
Wit how competitive these two sides are, their previous history has drawn mixed results. However, Germany have snuck a couple wins against Les Bleus recently. One of those wins was their last match against France, in which they won 2-0 back in March 2024. Goals from Florian Wirtz and Kai Havertz secured the victory on the night. The last five meetings between these sides are as follows:
