It is a return to cup action for both Serie A sides as Roma makes the trip north to the San Siro for this Coppa Italia Quarter Final tie against AC Milan. Roma have not won the national cup since the 07/08 season, however, AC Milan have had an even longer wait, not winning the trophy since 02/03. With both sides advancing in their respective European competitions too, a win in the Coppa Italia is vital for confidence (as both are suffering poor Serie A seasons in 8th and 9th) and spearheading a potential trophy haul.
Roma’s form heading into this fixture is three wins one draw and one loss in their last five games. In fact, they have lost just once in their previous 10 games dating back to mid-December (3D 6W). Claudio Ranieri has managed to slowly turn the Wolves form around after a poor start to the season, but the club still sit in 9th in the Serie A.
AC Milan’s last five matches have seen the club win twice, lose twice and draw once, including a shock Champions League defeat to Dinamo Zagreb. However, before the loss to Juventus in mid-January the club were on an eight-game unbeaten run. A mid-season managerial change might have come too late to save AC Milan’s league form, with the club in 8th, but with a promising Champions League match-up against Feyenoord, not all is lost over in Milan.
Predicted Line Up (4-2-3-1): Marco Sportiello, Strahinja Pavlovic, Matteo Gabbia, Kyle Walker, Theo Hernandez, Tijani Reijnders, Youssouf Fofana, Yunus Musah, Christian Pulisic, Rafael Leao, Alvaro Morata
New signing Kyle Walker is worth keeping an eye on, the Englishman made his debut on Sunday against Inter Milan and is likely to make a superb fullback pairing with Theo Hernandez. Samuel Chukwueze scored a brace in Milan’s opening Coppa Italia game, the Nigerian could be a key super sub that Sergio Conceicao can turn to later in the game.
Predicted Line Up (3-4-2-1): Mile Svilar, Evan N’Dicka, Mario Hermoso, Gianluca Mancini, Devyne Rensch, Angelino, Niccolo Pisilli, Kouadio Kone, Lorenzo Pellegrini, Paul Dybala, Artem Dobvyk
Dovbyk scored a brace in the last round of the Coppa Italia and is also the club’s top goalscorer this season with 12 goals. Milan are not the only team with a new right back in the squad, Dutchman Rensch recently made his debut as well and will look to continue impressing.
AC Milan and Roma have regularly contested matches as two of the historically greatest clubs in Italy. In their last 75 meetings, AC Milan have won 30 of those games, Roma have won 20 and there have been 25 draws. Their previous five ties are as follows:
