Accrington Stanley vs Walsall Prediction

League Two’s most intriguing game of the weekend sees out of form Accrington Stanley take on high-flying Walsall, in a game with significant consequence.

Walsall, who have a game in hand over first placed Port Vale, could move to the summit of the division themselves if they grab an away win here, and would suddenly mount pressure on the chasing pack to keep the gap as narrow as possible.

Accrington, should they lose, could find themselves lingering just a point outside the relegation zone should 23rd placed Carlisle beat Cheltenham Town.

As the game edges closer, here is everything you need to know about both sides ahead of kick-off.

Key Statistics

  • Accrington went 10 league games without a win at the start of this season, their longest winless run in the league since 2013.
  • They have also conceded the second most goals of any League Two team this season (22).
  • Walsall have scored 15 goals in the last five league games.
  • They are also averaging 2.2 goals a game, a record good enough to see any team through to promotion.

Accrington Stanley Preview

Accrington Stanley Predicted Lineup (4-3-1-2): William Crellin (GK); Zach Awe, Farrend Rawson, Sonny Aljofree; Jake Batty, Liam Coyle, Ben Woods, Connor O’Brien; Shaun Whalley; Jimmy Knowles, Dara Costelloe.

Given their winless run of 10 games, casual football followers would expect Accrington to be solidly glued to the bottom of the table. However, they have experienced a drastic turn around in form in recent weeks, picking up 10 points from the last available 18, and are suddenly looking like the solid mid-table side they were last season.

This is largely down to a change in tactic. Playing the 4-2-3-1 in the early stages of the season, the players just didn’t seem to quite click with the system. So coach John Doolan elected to go to a back three to provide the extra man in attack, and so far has been thoroughly justified in his decision.

They have beaten promotion chasers Gillingham and Barrow in their last three games, personifying the significant improving trend they have been on for the last month or so, and they will be hoping to add the impressive scalp of Walsall to their collection at the weekend.

Walsall Preview

Walsall Predicted Lineup (3-5-2): Tommy Simkin (GK); Taylor Allen, Harry Williams, Benjamin Barclay; Liam Gordon, Charlie Lakin, Ryan Stirk, Jamie Jellis, Connor Barrett; Nathan Lowe, Jamille Matt.

Walsall have been rock solid in the early stages of the campaign. Missing out on the play-off spots by just five points in 2023/24, Mat Sadlers’ squad has returned this season with a vengeance.

Striker Ryan Lowe has struck six league goals so far, putting him second in the standings, while right midfielder Connor Barrett leads the division's assist rankings with five.

Sadler has got his most important individuals firing, important for any side with promotion prospects, and should their electric form continue, they will have no problem in dispatching an improving but still struggling Accrington.

Accrington Stanley vs Walsall Betting Tip

Accrington, though clearly the inferior team, have home advantage for this one, a factor that cannot be underestimated, particularly in lower league football.

The fans will be amped up for the visit of the second best team in the league, and their keenness and energy will give their players just a little bit of extra motivation to go and pick up a result from the game.

We are backing the game to end in a draw, though it is impossible to say with how many goals.

Accrington Stanley vs Walsall Final Prediction

Accrington 2-2 Walsall

Walsall have scored 2 or more goals in each of their last five games, and I am backing them to do so here. However, Accrington, if they show some character, are more than capable of equalling their tally, and maybe even threatening to overtake it …
