League Two is shaping up to be one of the most exciting leagues in all of Europe this season as, just before the halfway point, just seven points separate second and 14th. Both Wimbledon and Gillingham are in this group, and both teams will be looking to end 2024 with three points.
AFC Wimbledon have had a little blip in their last few matches which has seen the teams below them close the gap. They are currently in fifth place, but teams as far down as Salford City in ninth could overtake them in just one match.
Gillingham have a bit of breathing space between them and the teams near the bottom, as they are on 30 points along with Bromley, MK Dons and Cheltenham. Gillingham’s last win came against MK Dons just a couple of weeks ago, but since then they have struggled a little bit.
Wimbledon Predicted Lineup - Owen Goodman; Ryan Johnson, John-Joe O’Toole, Riley Harbottle; James Tilley, Alistair Smith, Sam Hutchinson, Josh Neufville; Josh Kelly, Mathew Stevens; Omar Bugiel
Wimbledon’s last two games have been below par for them, which is really disappointing considering that their main rivals have also slipped up in the race for promotion. Last time out, they drew 1-1 with struggling Swindon Town, and before that they were losing 1-0 to Chesterfield. Their last victory was a bit of a surprise 1-0 victory over high-flying Doncaster Rovers.
Mathew Stevens has been their best player so far this season. The former Forest Green Rovers forward has 11 goals this season and is third in the division’s top scorers list. He joined the club in the summer from Forest Green, following the side’s relegation from the football league.
Gillingham Predicted Lineup - Glenn Morris; Max Clark, Conor Masterson, Max Ehmer, Remeao Hutton; Ethan Coleman, Robbie McKenzie; Aaron Rowe, Jack Nolan, Jonny Williams; Elliott Nevitt
Like Wimbledon, Gillingham’s last two matches have ended in a win and a draw. On Boxing Day, they were beaten 2-0 by Colchester thanks to two well taken goals. The week before that, they drew 2-2 with Cheltenham, who are now right on their tails. Due to participation in other competitions, the sides around Gillingham have all played a different number of games, making league predictions even more complicated.
Jayden Clarke is the side’s top goalscorer so far this season with seven, but he will miss this game having picked up his fifth yellow card. Who replaces him is a big question, as no one in the Gillingham team has come close to his impact so far this season.
Gillingham have the better recent record of the two sides, but in their first nine fixtures against Wimbledon, only won once. They were in League One together for quite a few seasons before they were both relegated to League Two in the 2021/22 campaign.
12th Mar 2024 - AFC Wimbledon 2-0 Gillingham - League Two
28th Nov 2023 - Gillingham 1-0 AFC Wimbledon - League Two
25th Feb 2023 - Gillingham 2-1 AFC Wimbledon - League Two
9th Aug 2022 - AFC Wimbledon 0-2 Gillingham - League Cup
30th Jul 2022 - AFC Wimbledon 2-0 Gillingham - League Two
Both Wimbledon’s and Gillingham’s recent results have been very similar, with a win, a draw and a loss in their last three. This season, Wimbledon have been the stronger side, but not too significantly. The big difference between these two sides is that Wimbledon have been dominant at home, conceding just nine times, while Gillingham’s away form isn’t the best, with just six goals scored.
With all of this in mind, our team of professional experts have decided that the best tip for this game is for AFC Wimbledon to Win. Odds of 4/5 on QuinnBet means that a £10 bet could see a potential return of £18.
