There’s no debate here. Ipswich Town are by far the better side coming into this EFL Cup match. The away side are now in the Premier League after their incredible rise over the last two seasons. AFC Wimbledon for all of their positives, are nowhere near on the level to compete with them.
The home side also do not have a strong record against big sides in the EFL Cup. In fact, they’ve only ever made it further than this round in EFL Cup history once, in 2022 when they got knocked out by Arsenal in the next round.
However, we don’t expect this game to go over the 3.5 goal mark. In Ipswich’s last four seasons in the EFL Cup, whenever they’ve played against a side that is similar in quality to Wimbledon, there has not been over 3.5 goals scored.
2023/24 - beat Bristol Rovers 2-0 in the first round
2022/23 - lost to Colchester United 1-0 in the first round
2021/22 - lost to Newport County 1-0 in the first round
2020/21 - beat Bristol Rovers 3-0 in the first round
Ipswich have also recently been battered by the Premier League, whilst being drawn arguably the hardest games possible for their first two fixtures. Playing against Liverpool and then Manchester City is certainly going to cause your starting squad to want a rest. And there’s plenty more physical battles that lie ahead, so we don’t think they’ll be playing their first team.
We’re backing Ipswich Town to win this match, and for there to be less than 3.5 goals scored by both teams combined. Through our bookmakers, you can get odds of 6/4. A £10 stake on this bet would return £25.
