Atalanta vs Venezia

Team Previews, Form and Standout Players

Both teams head into this game in slightly contrasting form. Over Atalanta’s last five games they have won twice and lost twice and drawn once with those defeats coming both from Club Brugge in the UEFA Champions League, subsequently knocking them out the competition. Venezia on the other hand have been handed three losses, drawn twice across their last five games. This Saturday’s match has big implications with Atalanta potentially slowly fading away from their title hopes and Venezia are aiming to escape the relegation zone.

Atalanta Preview

Formation: 3-4-2-1

Atalanta Predicted Line-Up: Marco Carnesecchi; Sead Kolasinac, Berat Djimsiti, Stefan Posch; Davide Zappacosta, Éderson, Marten de Roon, Raoul Bellanova; Ademola Lookman, Charles De Ketelaere; Mateo Retegui

After seeing themselves dumped out of the UEFA Champions League at the hands of Club Brugge, Atalanta can now turn their attention back to the Serie A and try to reignite their title challenging form they displayed in the first half of the season. They have started that spark well with their most recent match and winning in style, thrashing relegation zone side Empoli 0-5 away from home. That win now puts them on 16 from 26 games with four losses and six draws completing their record this campaign. Those results have left them with 54 points, only two behind second placed Napoli and three behind current Serie A leaders Inter Milan. With the two top contenders due to face each other Saturday evening, a win is a must to try and capitalise on the result and potentially see them at the top of the table.

Despite publicly criticizing Ademola Lookman recently, Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini has still left him in the starting lineups since the dispute. He bagged himself a brace in their win over Empoli, reaching 17 goal contributions this season. Split into 12 goals and five assists, Lookman has been one out the three pieces in Atalanta’s superb attack. Charles De Ketelaere has manged double digits in contributions with both five goals and assists. The main man up top though has been Mateo Retegui, relishing in his first season with La Dea. He leads the Serie A Golden Boot race with 21 goals to his name, six goals ahead of his next competitor in Fiorentina’s Moise Kean. The trio could very well influence the match this Saturday with their fantastic form in front of goal.

Venezia Preview

Formation: 4-2-3-1

Venezia Predicted Line-Up: Andrei Radu; Fali Candé, Jay Idzes, Alessandro Marcandalli; Mikael Egill Ellertsson, Kike Pérez, Hans Nicolussi Caviglia, Issa Doumbia, Alessio Zerbin; Gaetano Oristanio; Mirko Marić

Venezia have really struggled not only in against Atalanta over their recent matches, losing their last six meetings but also in this year’s edition of the Serie A. They were defeated 0-2 in the reverse fixture, making up one of their 15 losses this season. Those losses have been accompanied with three wins and eight draws in the 26 games that have taken place. The poor results have left them to sit inside the relegation zone, looking destined to go back down to Serie B after just a year stint in the topflight of Italian football. The 17 points they do have nowhere near good enough for Venezia.

The Lagunari have had a massive problem in finding the back of the net, one of the main reason as to why they have been so poor. Venezia have the joint third worst scoring tally in the Serie A and selling on their top scorer Joel Pohjanpalo in the January transfer window wasn’t the smartest move, now goalless in three consecutive matches. This looks like it could be an onslaught for them this Saturday.

Head To Head Stats: Atalanta vs Venezia

Final Prediction: Atalanta vs Venezia

Atalanta 4-0 Venezia

Atalanta need to win this match if they have any ambition of clinching the Serie A title. They have a tough run of fixtures after this match, facing Juventus and Inter Milan so they must pick up all three points against a team with one of the worst away records across Europe’s top five leagues.
