Two of the biggest German heavyweights clash this Wednesday in a huge Champions League game. This pair have already met three times this season, and Bayern are still yet to overcome the reigning German champions, so with Bayern at home on Wednesday night, will this finally be their chance?
Bayern Munich have lost five times all season (and just like Leverkusen only a single time in the Bundesliga), three of those losses have come in the Champions League to Barcelona, Aston Villa and Feyenoord. From their 10 Champions League games so far, they’ve won six, drawn one and lost three. Last time out they struggled to overcome Celtic, drawing 1-1 with the Scottish side.
This season it felt different for Leverkusen heading into the Champions League. They were no longer just a space filler like they had been for the majority of the last 15 years, they genuinely believed they had a chance to win it all, and they still do. They avoided an extra two playoff games by finishing 6th in the league phase this season, winning five of their eight games (D1, L2). Their only two losses came against Liverpool and Atletico Madrid, two of their three total losses in all competitions this season.
Predicted Line Up: Neuer; Laimer, Kim, Upamecano, Davies; Palhinha, Goretzka; Olise, Musiala, Coman; Kane
Since joining Bayern Munich in August 2023, no player has scored more UEFA Champions League goals than Harry Kane. Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich has completed more passes (883), made more line-breaking passes (174) and created more chances (30) than any other player in the UEFA Champions League this season.
Predicted Line Up: Hradecky; Mukiele, Tah, Hincapie; Frimpong, Aleix Garcia, Xhaka, Grimaldo; Tella, Schick, Wirtz
Florian Wirtz has been directly involved in seven goals in the UEFA Champions League for Bayer Leverkusen this season (six goals, one assist) – only Michael Ballack in 2001-02 has ever recorded more for the club in a season (9).
This will be the first ever meeting between Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen in major European competition. In German football the teams have met 99 times with Bayern winning 56, Leverkusen winning 22, with 21 draws. Bayern Munich won their last match against German opposition in the UEFA Champions League against Borussia Dortmund in the 2012-13 final, whilst Bayer Leverkusen last faced German opposition in the 2007-08 UEFA Cup, when they were defeated 3-2 by Hamburger SV.
Under Xabi Alonso, Bayer Leverkusen are unbeaten in their six matches against Bayern Munich across all competitions (W3 D3). They’ve kept a clean sheet in three of their last four against them. Their previous five meetings are as follows:
Two of the best defences in German football, it makes sense that this match ends as it started. With the game stretching across two legs, it would also be sensible to assume that it’ll be a draw come half time. For this reason, our betting experts say Half Time Draw & Under 2.5 Goals is the best value tip for this game. With odds at 11/4, a bet of £10 could see a potential return of up to £37.50.
