This Saturday’s League One clash sees Wycombe Wanderers make the trip to face Birmingham City at St Andrew’s Park. This is a big match for both sides as they sit first and second in the standings.
Both teams head into this game in good form, the pair of them unbeaten in their last five matches. Birmingham City have won four out of their last five, drawing their remaining match. Wycombe Wanderers on the other hand have been the opposite, drawing four and winning once in the same time frame. This Saturday should be an interesting game with the two top teams in League One battling it out.
Formation: 4-2-3-1
Birmingham City Predicted Line-Up: Ryan Allsop; Alex Cochrane, Ben Davies, Christoph Klarer, Ethan Laird; Seung-ho Paik, Tomoki Iwata; Taylor Gardner-Hickman, Willum Thór Willumsson, Kieran Dowell; Jay Stansfield
Birmingham City spent a lot in the summer transfer window to ensure that they will go back up into the Championship come the end of the season. So far it has worked as they sit top of League One and are finalist in the EFL Trophy. Domestically after 31 games they have won 22, lost twice and drawn seven which has left them with 73 points. That tally has left them nine points clear of their opponents Wycombe Wanderers with a game in hand to them as well.
One of the main reasons to their success has been striker Jay Stansfield who cost The Blues €17.80 million in the summer but he has more than returned on his price tag. In the 23 games he’s featured in, the 21 year old has 18 goal involvements, split into 16 goals and two assists. Another summer signing in Alfie May has paid off as well with him 10 goals and provided five assists, goals clearly not an issue for Birmingham. Defence has been a strong suit for Birmingham as well, keeping the most clean sheets in League One with 16 and have only conceded 19 goals across the whole season, the lowest tally in total. With Birmingham having not lost since late November and looking to continue their 17 game unbeaten streak, they will be a force to be reckoned with this Saturday as the Midlands side haven’t lost at home in their last 16 fixtures at St Andrew’s.
Formation: 4-2-3-1
Wycombe Wanderers Predicted Line-Up: Will Norris; Daniel Harvie, Caleb Taylor, Joe Low, Jasper Pattenden; Xavier Simons, Josh Scowen; Lez Lubala, Cameron Humphreys, Garath McCleary; Richard Kone
Wycombe Wanderers have left a three-point gap to their closest League One challengers in Wrexham, maintaining their automatic promotion place. After 32 games, Wycombe sit second in the standings with 18 wins, four losses and 1o draws. Those results have left them with 64 points, nine points behind leader Birmingham City. Wycombe looked to challenge Birmingham for the title, but the results haven’t been going their way since the departure of Matt Bloomfield who left to take the challenge of managing Luton Town after Rob Edwards’ sacking.
After bringing in new head coach Mike Dodds, Wycombe have recorded one win and two draws in the three League One game in charge. Someone that might help get back to consistent winning ways is the top scorer in the league Richard Kone. The 21 year old who was once homeless, has bagged 16 goals in his 19 appearances. If Wycombe still have aims of winning the League One title this year then Kone will have to be the difference maker on Saturday, his clinical form in front of goal a necessity.
The last three faceoffs have been split in the favour of Wycombe Wanderers, winning twice and drawing the remaining match to Birmingham City. Domestically Birmingham have been out of this world this season, it seems like they’ll pick up three points this Saturday.
