Borussia Monchengladbach will be determined to make up some ground to their rivals on Friday when they host fourth placed Mainz 05, who currently sit just four points ahead of the home side, making this game a theoretical “six pointer”.
The home side have had a resurgence in form in recent weeks, and have managed three wins in their last five to take them to the brink of the European places. A win over fellow Europe chasers Mainz would go a long way towards helping them qualify come the end of the season.
Mainz themselves continue to overachieve this season, and have strung together a nice to little run of three wins on the bounce to consolidate their current fourth place standing. Sitting on 41 points and just one behind third place Frankfurt, Bo Henriksen’s side will be hungry to hunt down a guaranteed Champions League spot for next season.
As a big game in the chase for Europe approaches, here is everything you need to know about both sides ahead of kick-off.
Borussia Monchengladbach Predicted Lineup (4-2-3-1): Jonas Omlin (GK); Luca Netz, Nico Elvedi, Ko Itakura, Joseph Scally; Julian Weigl, Philipp Sander; Robin Hack, Alassane Plea, Nathan N’Goumou; Tim Kleidendienst.
It has been a very up and down season up to now for Monchengladbach. They were as high as sixth in the table in November, but have since been lingering between eighth and eleventh, unable to escape the loop.
However, four wins in their last six have given them some cause for optimism, and a win against Mainz could see them rise back up to sixth, the final qualification spot for Europe.
However, they boast the worst goal difference inside the top 10 teams in the league, with just +3 to show for their efforts. They need to work out how to convincingly win matches if they are to be true European contenders come May.
Mainz 05 Predicted Lineup (3-4-3): Robin Zentner (GK); Andreas Hanche-Olsen, Moritz Jenz, Danny da Costa; Philipp Mwene, Nadiem Amiri, Kaishu Sano, Anthony Caci; Jae-Sung Lee, Jonathan Burkardt, Paul Nebel.
Continuing to defy expectations this season, Mainz maintained their excellent run with a win over fellow European contenders RB Leipzig last time out. A comeback 2-1 victory away from home against direct rivals is always a satisfying result, and as a result they find themselves right on the tail of Frankfurt.
Unaffected by the injury crisis’ afflicting other teams, and boasting the second best defence in the league with just 25 goals this season, fortune seems to be smiling down upon Bo Henriksen’s side, even more so because they came into this season off the back of a 13th place finish last campaign.
However, this is a group of players unaccustomed to competing at the top end of European football, and the end of season run-in could be their downfall. Henriksen needs to focus on keeping his players grounded, as composure typically wins games, particularly in the final weeks of the season.
Recent Meetings:
Despite both sides arriving at this match in decent form, Mainz have one trump card that their opponents don’t: Monchengladbach’s home form has been very poor of late. They have won just one of their last four at Borussia-Park, and with Mainz's stubborn defensive strategy perfect for fixtures on the road, we predict the away side to pick up a valuable win here.
Borussia Monchengladbach 0-1 Mainz 05
It will be an evenly matched game, and Monchengladbach will have more than enough opportunities to effect the scoreline, but their lack of confidence at home will see them pay the price.
