It is the first Old Firm Derby of the season and with three points up for grabs, as well as bragging rights, Celtic invite Rangers to Celtic Park in what is the 442nd clash between these two sides.
Celtic have been the team to beat in Scotland for many years now. They are a dominant force, ending the season as Scottish Premiership champions in 18 of the 25 seasons since 2000 and their last three titles have been back to back to back. Their efforts this year are to make it four consecutive titles.
They have started the season as they mean to go on as in their opening game Celtic dominated their way to a 4-0 win over Kilmarnock and then followed that up with a 0-2 away win against Hibernian in their second. Facing Hibernian again just a week later, this time in the Scottish League Cup, they saw victory again letting them progress through to the next round after a 3-1 win. Their most recent match ended in a 0-3 away thrashing versus St Mirren, leaving them with nine points from nine and yet to concede domestically so far. The Bhoys are a league above the rest of the SPFL teams but are geographically constricted to Scotland. In Celtic’s last five matches they have racked up a mighty 16 goals, conceded once and have a five game streak in which they have not lost to Rangers in.
The last meeting between these two sides saw Celtic victorious in the Scottish Cup thanks to a dramatic last minute winner from striker Adam Idah, a loanee at the time and Celtic have since signed him permanently. His efforts have allowed Celtic to extend their unbeaten streak against Rangers to five matches since their last defeat in May 2023.
Disappointingly for Rangers, they have seen second place finishes behind Celtic for the past three seasons. That is how long it has been since the last time that they won the Scottish Premiership, feeling like a lifetime ago for fans but Steven Gerrard and his side brought the title to Ibrox in 2021, breaking a club record of ending the season with their highest number of points, 102 to be exact.
Philippe Clement was handed the reigns to The Gers after Michael Beale was told to start packing last season and now with a domestic campaign under his belt, Clement will expect to make title race a lot closer and maybe even see Rangers lifting the league trophy come the final day.
Rangers opened the season with a goalless draw with Hearts but improved in their next two league fixtures. They ended up beating Motherwell 2-1 and then went on to tear Ross County apart in a 6-0 demolition.
Aiming to bring an end to their disappointing run of Old Firm derbies, Ranger will have to bring their best on Sunday.
