Charlton Athletic and Leyton Orient have started the season similarly. Both of them have won, lost and also struggled to score a lot of goals against League One quality opposition. Charlton won their opening day fixture away to Wigan Athletic, but during a match where only four shots were taken by both teams combined (Wigan didn’t have any). Meanwhile, Leyton Orient only managed five shots in their home loss to Bolton Wanderers.
In the League Cup in the week, Charlton showed once again that they lack a clinical marksman, with a loss at home to Birmingham City. They took 11 shots in that game, but did not score. Leyton Orient did thrash League Two side Newport County, but that’s a Newport County side that was letting the goals fly in on their opening match against Cheltenham.
Charlton are also off the back of selling League One top scorer Alfie May to Birmingham City, and seem to be finding it hard to fill such a strong striking role. Leyton Orient’s top scorer last season was Ruel Sotiriou who only managed 11 goals in the league, and has now moved on to Bristol Rovers.
Both sides are struggling to find the next so far this season, and both sides are without their star forwards from the last campaign.
This trend can also be seen in the two times these sides met last season. For the first match, Charlton won at home by just the single goal. In the second game, Leyton Orient won at home by just one goal, with neither of them managing to achieve a whole point of xG.
Saturday won’t exactly be a thriller.
