League One has been wild this season, with many a story unfolding in the third division of English football. Now, our expert tips and predictions have led us here.
Nathan Jones’ Charlton Athletic host Dave Challinor’s Stockport County at the Valley this Saturday.
Both sides have had mostly positive starts to the EFL League One season, Charlton sit in 8th with 16 points, while Stockport are 6th thanks to their slightly better goal difference.
This match presents an opportunity, either for Stockport to put some space between them and their opponents, or for Charlton to leapfrog them.
Charlton Athletic Predicted Line-up - William Mannion; Kayne Ramsay, Alex Mitchell, Lloyd Jones, Josh Edwards, Tyreece Campbell; Greg Docherty, Conor Coventry, Karoy Anderson; Matt Godden, Daniel Kanu
Charlton have a strong squad, and while they would’ve been hoping to push for promotion this season, they’ll need a win here in order to stay on track for the play-offs.
Their win against Birmingham City was very impressive, they limited their usually free flowing opponents to just three shots in the game, which is excellent game management.
Matt Godden will be vital, he has a knack for turning draws to wins with crucial goals, much like he did against Birmingham.
Stockport County Predicted Line-up - Corey Addai; Jay Mingi, Fraser Horsfall, Ethan Pye, Ibou Touray; Callum Camps, Lewis Bate; Lewis Fiorini, Jack Diamond, Kyle Wootton, Louie Barry
You wouldn’t know that Stockport had just been promoted from League Two last year given how comfortable they’ve seemed in the third tier this season.
Louie Barry has really stepped up a level, which has allowed them to remain around the play-off places, and they look good value to be there.
They might struggle against Charlton’s strong defensive unit, and captain Lewis Bate will need to lead his team to overcome it.
The two sides have faced each other just five times since 2007. Charlton Athletic have won three games, while Stockport have won just one.
Only one match has resulted in a draw.
7th December 2022 - Stockport 3-1 Charlton - FA Cup
26th November 2022 - Charlton 2-2 Stockport - FA Cup
6th March 2010 - Charlton 2-0 Stockport - League One
12th December 2009 - Stockport 1-2 Charlton - League One
Whilst the teams are level on points, and this match certainly seems tough to call, our research has led us to make a decision.
The combination of home advantage, historical record and their win against Birmingham, suggests this game might fall in Charlton’s favour.
We think overall the best value tip is Charlton Athletic to win, backed up by our research.
Odds of 29/20 on Ladbrokes mean that a £10 bet has the potential to return up to £24.50 in this match.
(odds subject to change)
Charlton Athletic 1-0 Stockport County
This game will be very tight, but Charlton’s tight defensive unit will set them apart from the opposition.
Whilst these teams might be looking for play-off spots, we think Birmingham City are going to win League One.
