A trip to Pride Park entails for Chesterfield as they make their way over for Round 1 of the EFL League Cup in which they will take on Championship side Deby County.

Derby County

Almost 20 years on from their Premier League record breaking worst season, Derby have seen many ups and downs including relegation into League One and promotion back into the Championship. That promotion was last year where they finished the campaign in second place, garnering them an automatic spot into the Championship. Their first back in that league after two years didn’t go to plan for them however as they lost 4-2 away to Blackburn Rovers on Championship opening day.

The Rams opted with four pre-season games and they faired averagely results wise. Out of the four games, they won twice and lost twice. Their opponents in this match, Chesterfield, was actually one of the teams they faced and that game went in favour of Chesterfield, a 4-0 away win for them. Derby might have been bested in that fixture but it was a friendly to get both sides ready for their domestic campaign, they will be sure to turn up to this EFL League Cup game as this one actually matters.

What was common in Derby’s pre-season though was goals, plenty of goals. Across those four games Derby managed to stick the ball in the back of the net a total of six times. That will be something that should be present in this game and could be a factor that helps them move into the next round of the competition. Another helping factor is that Derby have a streak of eight games at home where they have yet to beaten and they will want to extend that run in this clash.

Derby vs Chesterfield

Chesterfield

Chesterfield made sure that they made it into League Two last season, ending the season as title winners as the year prior they were unfortunate to finish third and then go onto record a loss during the National League Playoff Final by way of penalty shootout to Notts County. They started their season with a 1-1 draw with Swindon Town on opening weekend so they will need to improve if they want to make sure they beat Derby again, like they did in pre-season.

Now that The Spireites have made it back to League Two for the first time since the 2017/18 season, they have qualified for the EFL League Cup. When they were in this competition last, Chesterfield made it into Round 2 before being knocked out by Fleetwood Town. They have a chance to make it to the same place they got dumped from if they manage to beat Derby.

However, there is something that looms over them whenever they play in another team’s stadium at the moment. In their last six attempts, Chesterfield have been unable win away from home. In the friendly match against Derby that they played, they were at home but they will try to take the way they played in that match and try and translate it to a great performance at Pride Park.

What’s the tip?

Our betting experts have gone with a prediction of Derby To Win + Over 1.5 Goals. Despite the loses domestically and in that friendly, the experts expect a bounce back from Derby as they are in great form when playing at home. In their opinion, both of these sides concede goals too easily and that is why they predict over 1.5 match goals.
