Third placed Dundee United have a chance to catch up to second placed Rangers when they host Philippe Clement’s side in Sunday’s Scottish Premiership main event.
Currently, Dundee sit on 37 points, while Rangers have a 10 point gap to their pursuers. However, they remain 13 points behind league leaders Celtic, and will need to start focusing on staying clear of the chasing pack vying for their spot of runners-up.
Rangers are currently on a six game undefeated streak in the league, while Dundee have won just one of their last three. However, they tend to show up for big games, making Sunday’s fixture a fascinating prospect.
As the big game approaches, here is everything you need to know about both sides ahead of kick-off.
Dundee United Predicted Lineup (3-4-1-2): Jack Walton (GK); Kevin Holt, Declan Gallagher, Emmanuel Adegboyega; Will Ferry, Vicko Sevelj, Ross Docherty, Ryan Strain; Luca Stephenson; Sam Dalby, Glenn Middleton.
With the exception of Rangers and leaders Celtic, the Scottish Premiership is remarkably close right now, particularly in the chase for the Champions group, where top six sides split from the bottom six and play out the final stages between themselves.
Dundee United lead this chase, two points ahead of Aberdeen, and considering they were playing in the second tier of Scottish football only last season, this is a considerable achievement.
As with any promoted team, goals haven't been their strength, but stoic defence and good organization have seen them concede just 24 goals, the most of any side not named Celtic or Rangers.
Rangers Predicted Lineup (4-2-3-1): Jack Butland (GK); Jefte, Robin Propper, Leon Balogun, James Tavernier; Nicolas Raskin, Connor Barron; Ridvan Yilmaz, Nedim Bajrami, Vaclav Cerny; Hamza Igamane.
While a long way from threatening Celtic at the top of the table, Rangers have impressed in recent weeks. Beating Celtic and Aberdeen in the course of their six game unbeaten streak, they showed enough quality to prove they should be a lot closer to their Old Firm rivals.
However, cheaply dropped points have been too common. Draws against mid-table Hibernian and Dundee FC saw them drop further behind Celtic. They need to stop giving away easy wins and focus for the full 90 minutes, a facet which has been their downfall on multiple occasions this season.
However, they pushed Manchester United all the way in their Europa League fixture on Thursday, losing only due to an added time Bruno Fernandes winner. If they can bring that level of performance to Dundee United, they should prevail.
Recent Meetings:
Despite Rangers recent surge in goalscoring form, they will be facing up against one of the most stubborn defenses in the league, and it will take a huge effort to break through. It will be a closely fought game, and both sides drawing at half time is likely, so we are backing this.
We also think the game will have fewer than 2.5 goals. Dundee’s combination of excellent defence and somewhat tentative attack leads me to believe this will not be a goal-fest.
Dundee United 1-1 Rangers
With Rangers' ability to drop points against beatable teams, Dundee pose a more than fierce opponent, and will have Rangers frustrated in the first half. Both goals will be scored in the second period, with Dundee defending heroically to gain a point.
