Eintracht Frankfurt will look to get back to winning ways in the Bundesliga, as they host Union Berlin after suffering two consecutive heavy defeats to the top two in the league.
Sitting third, only one point separates them from fourth placed Mainz, with fifth placed Freiburg just one point further back, so a win is needed here if they are to cement their status in third place for another week.
Meanwhile, Union Berlin’s focus is on maintaining space between themselves and the relegation zone. They currently sit 14th, five points above the drop zone, and have recently been having serious struggles in front of goal, with the second worst goal scoring record in the league (20).
As the two teams look to rediscover some form, here is everything you need to know about both sides ahead of kick-off.
Eintracht Frankfurt Predicted Lineup (4-2-3-1): Kevin Trapp (GK); Arthur Theate, Tuta, Nnamdi Collins, Rasmus Kristensen; Ellyes Skhiri, Hugo Larsson; Fares Chaibi, Mario Gotze, Elye Wahi; Hugo Ekitike.
Frankfurt have been given a rough time of things recently. With February’s schedule pitting them first against Bayern Munich then against Bayer Leverkusen in the space of six days, much of manager Dino Toppmoller’s focus would have been on damage limitation.
Unfortunately, his side did not concede, conceding eight goals across the two fixtures while scoring just one. These results left them 11 points adrift of the top two, all but extinguishing any slim title hopes they had.
Now their focus is on Champions League qualification. They are in pole position to qualify, but games against opposition such as Union Berlin are key. They cannot afford to drop points in these very winnable games. In fact, if they lose here, the risk falling as low as fifth if both Freiburg and Mainz pick up maximum points in their fixtures.
Union Berlin Predicted Lineup (3-4-3): Frederik Ronnow (GK); Diogo Leite, Danilho Doekhi, Leopold Querfeld; Jerome Roussillon, Rani Khedira, Lucas Tousart, Josip Juranovic; Benedict Hollerbach, Andrej Ilic, Woo-Yeong Jeong.
Despite a positive start to the season that saw Berlin go unbeaten in their opening five competitive games, things quickly derailed for Steffen Baumgart’s side. Since the opening five games, they have scored just 16 times in the league, while conceding a hefty 35 in return.
While they have maintained a relatively comfortable gap to the drop zone, they can ill afford any slip ups. It only takes one win for both St Pauli and VFL Bochum to put the Capital side under some sudden pressure.
With that being said, expect Berlin to fight hard for every single point on offer from now to the end of the season. That doesn’t mean they will win all of them, or even the majority of them, but Bundesliga survival is immensely important to them, and they will give every game a huge effort.
Recent Meetings:
While both sides look to revive their form, Frankfurt will know that as the third best team in the league, the onus is on them to pick up a result here. Union Berlin are tough opposition, but their lack of form will see them pay the price, and Frankfurt will create a bit of breathing room between themselves and fourth place.
Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 Union Berlin
Frankfurt will struggle to break through in the first half, but the second period will see the Berlin resistance broken, and the home side will return to winning ways.
