England's Next Permanent Manager Tips & Predictions | Football Park

England's Next Permanent Manager

The FA have insisted that they are keen on Gareth Southgate to remain as England manager until at least the 2026 World Cup in America, regardless of the result of the Euro 2024 Final where England will take on Spain in Berlin.

There has been a lot of criticism over the defensive nature of Southgate’s tactics, with many fans calling for him to be sacked but opinions might change depending on if football comes home on Sunday.

In the event that Gareth does decide to call it quits, we have suggested five candidates that could take on this role based on their odds in replacing the man who has delivered England back to back European Championship Finals.

Lee Carsley

Sticking with someone in the England structure, current Under 21s manager Lee Carsley could slot right into the gap that Southgate would leave. He was first appointed in 2021 and has since gone onto win last year’s Under 21 European Championship.

He has averaged 2.41 points per game over 29 matches in this role, with an Under 21s record of 23W-5L-1D, leaving him with a 79.31% win rate.

Something that gives him an advantage over all the other candidates is that he has plenty of experience with the up and coming players. Adam Wharton, Anthony Gordon, Cole Palmer, Connor Gallagher and Marc Guehi, players who have all recently been included in in the senior squad for Euro 2024 have previously been coached by Carsley.

Going forward, there will be many more players that have done an incredible job under him that will flourish on the big stage no thanks to Carsley’s involvement in their development and on a personal level as being a manager isn’t all about the results sometimes. This element is something that could push Lee further ahead in the replacement list.

What are the odds for Lee Carsely?

Through our bookmakers, you can get odds of 10/1 for him to be the next manager, returning you £110 from a £10 stake.

He might not be a top name in comparison to some of the other candidates, but I wouldn’t count him out just because of that.

Jurgen Klopp

He recently announced he was stepping down as Liverpool’s manager following 8 years, 8 months, and 22 days of service to have a break in his managerial career. Since then, Jurgen Klopp has been hot property to become the manager of various different teams.

He swore that he would never return to the role as a manager for any Premier League club out of respect for Liverpool, but that doesn’t mean that he has to leave England.

Klopp has managed an outstanding 1,078 games in his managerial career, winning 596, losing 244 and drawing 238. Across those games he has garnered a 57.66% win percentage. He has won every trophy that an English club can win with Liverpool and that experience could be vital for England whose men’s senior team have not won any major trophy since the 1966 World Cup. The United States did approach the German to ask if he would become their manager, however he politely declined saying that he wanted to stick to the break he is having in his career.

If the right offer came about for this England job, who knows if his decision would change as there is a few past and present Liverpool players in Southgate’s current Euro 2024 squad, most notably Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez. He could relish wanted to play with them again and accept a proposal from the FA once the job is vacant.

What are the odds for Jurgen Klopp?

Through our bookmakers, you can get odds of 10/1 for Jurgen Klopp to be the next England manager, returning you £110 from a stake of £10.

With his C.V, there is no doubt that he is one of the greatest managers in the world and he could add to that impressive resume with England.

Mauricio Pochettino

Currently out of job after leaving Chelsea by mutual consent at the end of last season, Mauricio Pochettino is in the perfect position to replace Gareth Southgate when the England job is available and become the next permanent manager.

Over the span of his 15 year career, Pochettino has attained a managerial record of 319W-191L-139D, ending up with a 49.15% win rate from 649 matches in charge. Having manged some teams that are in the big 6 of Europe’s top 5 leagues; Tottenham Hotspur, PSG, and Chelsea for example, he will know what it is like to handle the pressure of being in charge of an elite side that should be firing on all cylinders at all times.

Despite a very poor start to the season last year, he was able to claw Chelsea back to European football, finishing 6th in the Premier League. He also managed to help the London club to make it to the Semi-Finals of the FA Cup, but Chelsea were ultimately beaten by Manchester City.

A huge part of that small success was winger Cole Palmer, who will be an England squad member for the foreseeable future given his ability. Mauricio knows how to get the best out of him and as Palmer is one of the better players in the side, so too will he be able to get the best out of England.

What are the odds for Mauricio Pochettino?

Through our bookmakers, you can odds as good as 4/1. If Poch is given the reigns of the England team, then you would see a return of £50 if you placed a £10 stake.

Now that Erik Ten Haag has committed to staying at Manchester United, Pochettino and his agency will solely face their attention to become the next Three Lions manager.

Eddie Howe

Eddie Howe is a man that has been linked with becoming the England manager for some time now so there is no doubt that he is still in line for the job. He has a habit of taking poor performing sides to much greater levels.

Within the span of a decade and two spells in charge, Howe amazingly took Bournemouth from bottom of the English Football League, 24th in League 2, all the way up to their highest finishing position of 9th in the Premier League.

As for his latest appointment, he took charge of a then poor Newcastle United side in November of 2021 whilst they were in 19th position in the league. Howe dragged The Magpies to 11th place come the end of that season. The following campaign, Newcastle finished in 4th, earning them a place in the UEFA Champions League, ending the 20 year drought from the competition.

Eddie Howe’s managerial record is 669 games, 292 wins, 241 loses and 136 draws, amassing a 43.65% win rate. That might seem too low for the calibre of team that England is, but the lower EFL leagues are exceedingly difficult to just steam roll through.

What are the odds for Eddie Howe?

Through our bookmakers the odds of Eddie Howe to become the next permanent England manager are 2/1 which returns £30 from just a £10 stake.

Some Newcastle fans are not best pleased with Howe’s results from last season, even though they suffered an injury crisis, so now would be an exciting time to jump ship and create some history at international level.

Graham Potter

Coming into the conversation with the worst perception out of all the candidates, Graham Potter is actually the bookie’s favourite to replace Southgate once he leaves the England job. What does stand in his favour though is that fans have wanted him in the job for at least the last 2 years.

Potter has been without a club since his sacking from the Chelsea job, fired before one full season as manager. He was given the responsibility of replacing Thomas Tuchel who was axed by Todd Boehly over disagreements and the fact that Potter did a stellar job at Brighton Hove & Albion. Starting his career in Sweden with Östersunds FK, he has gone on to manage 440 games. In those fixtures, he has racked up a record 185W-137L-118D, working out as a 42.05% win percentage.

As he has not had employment since that Chelsea stint it is hard to judge his recent performances but when he was at Brighton, he had the media singing his praises. Until Roberto De Zerbi came along, Potter had Brighton finish 9th in the 21/22 season, a club record for position and points.

What are the odds for Graham Potter?

Through our bookmakers, Graham Potter is 11/10 to become England’s next permanent manager. A £21 return from a simple £10 stake.

His preferred formation of 3-4-2-1 is exactly the same that Gareth Southgate has played in his last two matches leading up to the Euro 2024 Final. The FA might see this and want a smooth transition, not having to go through the stages of finding the best formation that suits the talented squad we have.

This could allow England to retain out place in the top 5 FIFA World Rankings and remain in the fights to win silverware at major tournaments, ending the 56 years of hurt we have suffered if we don’t end up beating Spain on Sunday.

Who do Football Park think will get the job?

We think that Graham Potter will be the most likely person to be given the keys at St George's Park for 3 reasons:

He is the one that is most likely easiest to approach as he does not have a club to steal him away from.

His style of play is best suited to how Southgate plays now, just without the overload in defensiveness.

And finally, given that Potter has been born and raised in England in contrast to fellow free agent and former Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino. It will mean so much more to him personally, making him do everything in his power to attain this prestigious achievement.
