Chelsea will look to keep the good times rolling as they take a trip to Goodison Park for the last time this Sunday.
Trampling Shamrock Rovers 5-1 in midweek to secure top spot in the Conference League, the Blue’s are a team high on confidence, and now unbeaten in their last eleven, will view this game against Everton as a chance to pile the pressure onto league leaders Liverpool.
Everton have had a week to recover from the gritty 0-0 draw with Arsenal, inadvertently assisting Chelsea in their chase for the title, with Jordan Pickford emerging as the standout player after making multiple stunning stops. However, sitting in 16th and three points above the relegation zone, the Toffee’s will want to pull away from the bottom as soon as possible.
As a key game at both ends of the table, here is everything you need to know about both sides ahead of kick-off.
Everton Predicted Lineup (4-4-1-1): Jordan Pickford (GK); Vitalii Mykolenko, Jarred Branthwaite, James Tarkowski, Ashley Young; Iliman Ndiaye, Idrissa Gueye, Orel Managala, Jesper Lindstrom; Abdoulaye Doucoure; Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
While Everton defended heroically against Arsenal, they can’t afford to simply sit back and absorb 90 minutes of pressure every game. They managed just two shots against the Gunners’ and 99% of the game was played in their own half.
The Toffee’s have struggled for anything other than mediocre in recent seasons, and while Sean Dyche has steadied the ship after a couple of relegation scares, they are unlikely to get anywhere other than mid-table with him at the helm.
However, he has managed to pull off a number of shock results in his time at the club, and with Everton’s home form against Chelsea almost perfect, there are certainly silver linings for the Goodison Park faithful.
Chelsea Predicted Lineup (4-2-3-1): Robert Sanchez (GK); Renato Veiga, Levi Colwill, Tosin Adarabioyo, Malo Gusto; Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez; Jadon Sancho, Cole Palmer, Noni Madueke; Nicolas Jackson.
If the Premier League table had been charted since the beginning of May last season, Chelsea would be comfortably at the top, testament to the superb work of Mauricio Pochetinno at the end of his tenure at the club, and to the superb start they have had under Enzo Maresca.
They have been turned into a goal scoring machine, and while their defence can look suspect at times, it doesn’t really make a difference when they can outscore their opponent nine times out of 10.
However, they are missing a number of players for this one; Marc Cucurella is suspended, and Romeo Lavia, Reece James, Wesley Fofana and Beniot Badiashile are injured, but with Chelsea superb squad depth, there is always someone more than capable of taking up the baton from whoever is missing.
Last five meetings:
It is hard to look past Chelsea as winners here, and given their recent run of form, they likely haven’t given their Goodison Park voodoo a second thought.
That is why we are backing Chelsea to come away with three points here. It’s hard to find one thing that isn’t going in their favour right now.
Everton 0-2 Chelsea
Everton will attempt to defend in a similar way they did against Arsenal, but such is Chelsea’s proficiency in front of goal, it is only a matter of time before they unlock the Everton backline.
