Desperate for a win, Everton invite League Two’s Doncaster Rovers to Goodison Park for this Round 2 Carabao Cup fixture.
Everton were torn apart on their opening game of the season when they travelled to face seaside town club Brighton where a 3-0 drubbing ensued. The Toffees then followed that result with another away from home thrashing, curtesy of Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday. The hosts in that game made it so that Everton now sit rock bottom of the Premier League after two consecutive defeats and a minus seven goal difference.
Everton have found better performances in the Carabao Cup in recent years though, reaching the Quarter-Final stage a total of three times out of the last five seasons. One of those times being last year where they were on course to face bitter rivals Liverpool in the Semi-Finals but were ultimately succumbed by Fulham by way of a heartbreaking penalty shootout.
Despite what fans thinking that there is no hope for the club, there is a positive for Everton. The Merseyside team have not been eliminated from this stage of the competition in 23 years, the 2001/02 season the last time.
Doncaster have had a good start to their League Two campaign, attaining six points from a possible nine after two wins and just the one loss. They displayed a dominating effort against Accrington Stanley in their first game, beating them 4-1. Next game and the dominance was switched around as they suffered a 3-1 defeat to Newport County. The Rovers picked themselves back up after that loss on Saturday as they were victorious versus Morcombe thanks to a goal from new signing Harry Clifton.
Grant McCann’s side made it to this stage of the tournament by beating fellow League Two team Salford 0-2. They are starting to find the form they showed towards the end of last season where they won ten games on the bounce to make it to the League Two Playoff Semi-Finals. In which they were devastatingly beaten by Crewe Alexandra in a penalty shootout.
Doncaster have not progressed beyond Round 2 of the Carabao Cup since the 2027/18 season when they were eliminated by Premier League opponents Arsenal. Coincidentally they reached this stage last year and were drawn Everton. They were handed a defeat by them that time, but Doncaster will be hoping to change that this time given the horrendous form that Everton have shown for a while, going back the last couple of years.
Our betting experts have gone with Everton To Win + Over 0.5 First Half Goals. Despite Everton being the only team in the Premier League yet to score, they are still a member of the Premier League, leaving a massive gap between divisions between the two sides. It is unlikely that there will be a massive upset as Everton need this victory to help with morale if they have any chance of avoiding relegation.
