Morocco have been setting the Paris 2024 Olympics alight so far this summer. They’ve just demolished the USA 4-0 in the quarter-finals, and are now looking like serious contenders to go all the way. If they did win gold, it would be their first ever. But how have they gotten this far?
A big part of their success has of course been Achraf Hakimi. The PSG defender has been pivotal. Yes he’s a defender, but he’s arguably the best attacker at the Olympics. According to the ratings from Sofascore, he’s been the best player at the entire tournament. He scored against the USA and he’s been threatening in every game he plays.
Since Morocco lost to Ukraine in the second game, they seem to have turned over into a new chapter. Since then, they’ve also thrashed Iraq 3-0 and not conceded a goal.
Spain did look strong against Japan. Barcelona’s Fermin Lopez, specifically, looked great. He scored two goals and is the highest rated player for Spain at the tournament so far. In their final group game though, they looked shaky. And ended up losing 2-1 to fellow semi-finalist Egypt. They went 2-0 down in that match. That’s a side of weakness that Morocco are yet to show so far.
