Saturday’s 5pm kick-off sees Genoa faced with the unenviable task of keeping Antonio Conte’s red hot Napoli quiet.
Genoa have been on an impressive run of six games without defeat, which includes picking up a point against AC Milan and two wins over Udinese and Parma. However, Napoli pose a different challenge altogether.
With the joint lowest tally of goals conceded in the league, and with a front three of Romelu Lukaku, Kvicha Khvaratskhelia and David Neres playing out of their skins, Antonio Conte reignited his sides desire for trophies after a pathetic defence last season that saw them finish 10th.
As the game approaches, here is everything you need to know about both sides ahead of kick-off.
Genoa Predicted Lineup (4-2-3-1): Nicola Leali (GK); Aaron Caricol, Johan Vasquez, Mattia Bani, Alessandro Vogliacco; Morten Frendrup, Milan Bedelj; Fabio Miretti, Morten Thorsby, Alessandro Zanoli; Andrea Pinamonti.
Patrick Viera has turned Genoa into a dangerous unit in recent games. The French manager, who has had difficult spells at Crystal Palace and Strasbourg coach, seems to have finally found his niche in Italy.
After a rough start to the season which saw them go on a run of 9 games without victory, the squad started to click in early November, and are unbeaten since then.
While Napoli may be an entirely different beast to the teams they kept at bay in recent games, there seems to be a belief coursing through Viera’s side right now, and if they remain in the same vein of form, then Napoli will struggle to break them down.
Napoli Predicted Lineup (4-3-3): Alex Meret (GK); Mathias Olivera, Alessandro Buongiorno, Amir Rrahmani, Giovanni Di Lorenzo; Scott McTominay, Billy Gilmour, Frank Zambo-Anguissa; David Neres, Romelu Lukaku, Matteo Politano.
While Napoli may lie second in the table, there have been signs that their electric form has started to tail off. Prior to their win against Udinese last time out, Napoli had lost two games on the bounce for the first time this season, both against Lazio, with one coming in the Coppa Italia.
However, with fixtures against their bogey team seemingly behind them, Napoli will look to hit a similar vein of form that saw them go undefeated between August and November, spanning 10 games in all competitions.
With no European football to concentrate on this season, Napoli’s focus can remain solely on the league, and with the way Conte has his side playing, you would back them to push all the way to the final matchday. However, they need to beat Genoe to stay right on the tail of table toppers Atalanta.
Last five meetings:
Although Genoa have been impressive over the last month or so, their good run of form has so far avoided competing with times directly vying for the title.
With Napoli looking to continue their good league form, they will be hungry to make a statement to the teams around them here, which is why we are backing Napoli to win.
Genoa 0-1 Napoli.
Given Genoa’s solid defence and Napoli’s relatively low goal output compared to their rivals, there is little promise that this will be a high scoring thriller.
However, Napoli will find a way to win this one, likely through a second half winner.
