It might be the International Break but here at Football Park that doesn’t mean that the tips will stop coming. We have a great one for Tuesday’s EFL Trophy match between Gillingham and Peterborough United. Find out what it is below.
Hosts Gillingham are in phenomenal form as they currently sit in top spot for the League Two standings. Since their 17th place in the 2022/23 season, Gillingham have ended the next season in 7th. At the rate their going, promotion seems very likely, especially due to their current position. They got to first by beating Carlisle United 4-1 on opening weekend. That win was followed by a 0-1 on the road win against Morecombe but then Gillingham and Fleetwood Town could not be separated in a goalless draw. Their most recent domestic game was a victory in a clash versus Chesterfield that ended 1-0 in their favour.
The Gills have never won this competition, the furthest they’ve reached was a Semi-Final appearance against Bristol City in the 2014/15 season. A disappointing first leg left and aggregate score too much to come back from in the second, allowing eventual winners Bristol City to progress into to next round. With the great form that Gillingham are in, they have a good chance of picking up all three points in this match, trying to achieve their initial aim of topping the group.
Peterborough have finished in the League One Playoff spaces for the last two years on the bounce, unable to make that step up back into the Championship like they were three years ago. Last season’s attempt had them face off against Oxford United in the Playoff Semi-Final, come the end of both legs and they were knocked out, defeated 1-2 on aggregate. This League One campaign has started out averagely for them though. A 0-2 loss to Huddersfield Town in their opening game was followed up with back to back away wins. Thrashing Shrewsbury Town 1-4 and then a 1-2 win against Exeter City. However in their most recent game, they lost once more, suffering a loss at the hands of Wrexham just a couple of days ago.
The Posh are two time winners of this competition. Their first time lifting the trophy was in the 2013/14 season, edging out Chesterfield 1-3 to get their hands on the cup. The most recent EFL Trophy win for Peterborough was actually last year, meaning they come into this tournament as reigning champions. Last year they faced Wycombe Wanderers and came out on top in a 2-1 result. Their aim for this year’s edition will most likely be winning it for the second time in a row and their opportunity to do so starts this Tuesday.
Our betting experts have gone with Lincoln To Win. Peterborough have showed signs that they are struggling defensively. They have not successfully managed to keep a clean sheet for nine consecutive matches, something Gillingham will look to exploit. Another statistic that swings in their favour and one of the reasons for our prediction is that Gillingham have accumulated an impressive 14 games unbeaten streak whilst playing at Priestfield. They should manage to extend that run in this EFL Trophy match.
