Scottish football officially returned this week after a long awaited break and Kilmarnock aim to kick off their season with a win in this match versus St Johnstone who have already played their first game.
The host were unfortunate to suffer a 4-0 defeat at the hands of favourites to win the Scottish Premiership side Celtic on opening day but they come into this match with a realer expectation of a win.
Kilmarnock had a varied pre-season with them winning three and losing two from their five friendlies. They have played more football before the start of the domestic season however as they were involved in UEFA Europa League qualification matches. They did go on to loss to Belgian side Cercle Brugge 2-1 on aggregate, demoting them to UEFA Conference League qualifiers where they ended their game against Tromso IL with two goals apiece.
Something going in Kilmarnock’s favour though is that their opponents in St Johnstone were narrow survivors in stayed in the top flight of Scottish football last season.
As mentioned previously, St Johnstone were lucky not to be relegated last year, escaping the relegation playoff spot with a margin to Ross County by one singular point. The bad form has continued into this season as well as they started the league with a 1-2 loss against Aberdeen
St Johnstone have not done too badly when facing Kilmarnock in the past but with the events of last season I think that they will be outplayed in this one. They have lost the last two fixtures in this matchup and a third time could be on the way.
The Saints have enjoyed a good run of results through pre-season and despite the lost in their previous match they performed well on and off the ball. The last five matches St Johnstone have played, they have totalled a tally of 12 goals, so I expect them to grab at least one in this match.
Our betting experts have gone with the prediction of Kilmarnock Double Chance & Both Teams To Score. St Johnstone’s poor campaign last year is still fresh on the memory, but they won’t give up without out a fight. Combining the two team’s last five matches, there has been a result with both sides scoring seven out of ten times, something we’re predicting to add to that stat.
