Linzer Athletik-Sport-Klub, who have become universally known as LASK, will face WSG Tirol in the Austrian Bundesliga knowing that a win would virtually guarantee their survival as they battle it out with five other teams in the relegation group.
With the table splitting in half after 22 games apiece, and their points total’s halved, LASK have done an impressive job of recovering from disappointment, after missing out on the championship group by just two points, and now they lie in relative seventh, first in the relegation group, and 13 points clear of the relegation spot.
WSG Tirol have had a trickier time of things. They lie just two points above last placed Altach, and have won just one game since December, albeit this came in their last outing, a5-3 home victory over Austria Klagenfurt.
As the game approaches, here is everything you need to know about both sides ahead of kick-off.
This game will be shown on One Football at 6:30pm on Friday.
LASK Predicted Lineup (4-2-3-1): Tobias Lawal (GK); George Bello, Robert Zulj, Philipp Ziereis, Branko Jovicic; Sascha Horvath, Ivan Ljubic; Florian Flecker, Andres Andrade, Krystof Danek; Maximilian Antrup.
LASK are unbeaten since the league split in half, and though they couldn’t seal their spot in the Championship group during the regulation half of the season, they are now showing that their side is more than capable enough of competing amongst Austrias elite.
They may be undefeated in their last four, but they have in fact lost just once since mid-December, stretching their run to one defeat in their last 12. It appears their poor run in November gave them a serious wake up call, and they have been playing like title contenders ever since.
With seven games left in the bottom half, a win here could take them to within a point of guaranteed safety, depending on other results, and with the form they are in, you wouldn’t bet against them sealing safety at the earliest possible opportunity. There is a chance they gather a higher points tally then half of the Championship group if they continue this vein of form.
WSG Tirol Predicted Lineup (5-3-2): Adam Stejskal (GK); Lennart Czyborra, Osarenen Okungbowa, Jonas David, David Jaunegg, Quincy Butler; Johannes Naschberger, Valentino Muller, Bror Blume; Stefan Skrbo, Lukas Hinterseer.
Though they started the season with seven points in the first three games, gaps in the Tirol side quickly started to appear. Though their defence has been sturdy, their attack is below-par, with Tirol boasting the second worst goal tally (26) in the league.
They have failed to score in 11 of their 25 league fixtures this season. It doesn’t matter who you are, a record like that is extremely unflattering, and ahead of playing an in-form LASK, Tirol coach Philipp Semlic knows exactly which areas his side needs to work on.
Sitting two points above the foot of the table, a loss here could see them drop as far as 11th if Hartberg and Klagenfurt lose, sitting just above the drop zone on goal difference. Tirol need to figure out a working formula, and fast.
Recent Meetings:
Combining the recent form of both sides with the recent history of this fixture, the odds are overwhelmingly in favour of LASK here, and who can blame the bookies. One loss in 12 and an unbeaten record against Tirol since 2022, it can only be an LASK win on Friday.
LASK 3-0 WSG Tirol
LASK will continue their excellent defensive record, notching a fourth clean sheet in five games, and Tirol’s attacking struggles will go on, as they shoot their 12th blank in the league this season.
