It certainly isn’t the most ideal start to life back in the Championship this weekend for Portsmouth with their opening game seeing them travel to title favourites Leeds United on the opening Saturday.
In their histories Leeds and Portsmouth have come up against each other on 58 occasions. This game is set to be the 59th fixture.
Leeds United do have the advantage having won 23 of those games to Portsmouth’s 18. In fact Pompey have won just one more game than there have been draws in this fixture with this match displaying 17 draws over the years.
Interestingly the two teams haven’t come up against each other since February 2012 a game that ended in a draw. Leeds United extended their run to four games unbeaten against Portsmouth. Will they continue that run here?
Neither side has any major injury concerns to worry about. In fact the away side come into this game with no injury concerns at all with Jordan Williams, Josh Murphy and Samuel Silvera all expected to make their debuts.
The only question mark going into this game is for Leeds man Jayden Bogle who picked up a knock against Valencia in pre-season. However, manager Daniel Farke claimed after the game that it was nothing more than a dead leg suggesting he should be available to start in this match.
Leeds United - Illan Meslier, Jayden Bogle, Joe Rodon, Pascal Struijk, Junior Firpo, Ethan Ampadu, Ilia Guev, Daniel James, Georginio Rutter, Wilfried Gnoto, Mateo Joseph
Portsmouth FC - Will Norris, Zak Swanson, Jordan Williams, Conor Shaughnessy, Connor Ogilvie, Owen Moxon, Tom Lowery, Paddy Lane, Samuel Silvera, Josh Murphy, Kusini Yengi
Despite Leeds failing to gain promotion last season they certainly had a fantastic year. One player that stood out was Georginio Rutter who we would expect to have another good campaign this year.
Last season, out of the 81 goals that Leeds managed in the league, Rutter provided 21 goal contributions for the whites. Something he will look to continue into this season.
Arguably, as unfortunate as it may be, selecting a pick in this game was surprisingly simple.
Although Portsmouth had a good year last year and aren’t in bad form by any means Leeds is quite possibly the toughest challenge they could have asked for. And with the amount of goals that Leeds tend to score we would expect a lot in this game as well.
Despite that Portsmouth are likely to put up a big fight in order to show the nation just why they got promoted last season and why they deserve their spot in the Championship.
This is why our team of professional tipping experts are backing Leeds United To Win and Over 3.5 Match Goals in this fixture. With odds of 19/10, a £10 bet could return a potential £29 making it our best value pick for this game.
Title favourites Leeds United host newcomers Portsmouth at 12:30 on Saturday 10th August 2024 in what is a must watch game. Luckily, you can check out all the action live on Sky Sports’ newest channel SkySports+.
