The UEFA Conference League Round of 16 stage is almost up, and it could still go either way in this tie on Thursday. Legia Warsaw finished in the top eight of the league phase, qualifying automatically for this round. Molde, on the other hand, finished 23rd, almost facing elimination before only just edging past Shamrock Rovers to make this tie. However, the Norwegian side have taken the advantage heading into the second leg in Poland. Can they hold onto the win and make it to the quarterfinals?
Legia Warsaw won four of their league phase games and lost two, this included an impressive victory against Real Betis. Winning their first four games of the phase was impressive and left them in a strong position, however, since then they have not won and lost to the likes of FC Lugano and Djurgarden. The Polish side now have to win this game, otherwise they will be out, so if there was ever a time to fix their form, it is now.
Predicted Line Up: Kovacevic; Wszolek, Jedrzejczyk, Kapuadi, Vinagre; Chodyna, Kapustka, Oyedele, Gual, Morishita; Shkurin
Brazilian baller Luquinhas did not start against Molde last week but came off the bench to score an important goal. The winger has four goals this campaign, including a brace against Dinamo Minsk. He could start this game or have an influence off the bench.
Molde didn’t have a brilliant league phase, only winning two of their six games, and losing to the likes of Jagiellonia Białystok (another Polish team). However, the Norwegian giants are experienced in Europe and have shown their knockout prowess in last week’s tie. With their domestic league kicking off at the end of the month, Molde are only just gearing up for the season and do not have the fixture congestion that their opponents have, giving them the advantage.
Predicted Line Up: Karlstrom; Stenevik, Lund, Haugan, Linnes; Daehli, Breivik; Eriksen, Eikrem, Kaasa; Gulbrandsen
Frederik Ihler was Molde’s top scorer in the league phase with four goals, but will start on the bench, he is a dangerous option as a super sub. Kristian Eriksen has played almost every minute of Molde’s European campaign and scored against Legia Warsaw last week, the attacking midfielder will be one to look out for on Thursday.
These two European clubs have met five times in their history, with this being the third time they’ve been drawn up against each other in a European season. They met at the round of 16 playoff stage a year ago in the same competition with Molde winning both legs of the tie. Coincidentally Molde won the first leg of their Conference League tie 3-2 at home last year as well, Legia will not want a repeat of the 2024 second leg which ended in a 3-0 away win for Molde. Their five meetings are as follows:
Molde blew a three goal lead in the first leg but managed to hold onto the victory. Do not be surprised if Legia Warsaw take the lead in this game, but Molde fight back. A realistic outcome of this fixture is a similar scoreline to last week.
For this reason, our betting experts say Legia Warsaw to Win and Over 2.5 Goals is the best value tip for this game. With odds at 9/5, a bet of £10 could see a potential return of up to £28.
(odds subject to change)
Legia Warsaw 3-2 Molde (after 90 mins)
