Lens will be considered major underdogs on Saturday when they host a so far unbeaten PSG side in Ligue 1 on Saturday.
The home side, who lie seventh, are the second lowest scorers in the top 13 sides in the French top flight, and while they have the second best defensive record in the league, that hard work could become unstuck against a PSG side who have scored 46 league goals in just 17 games.
The two sides played each other on December 22nd in the Coupe de France, which saw them tied at 1-1 after 90 minutes. While PSG came out as penalty shootout victors, Lens’ stubborn defensive performance will be cause for cautious optimism amongst Will Still’s squad.
As the game approaches, here is everything you need to know about both sides ahead of kick-off.
Lens Predicted Lineup (4-2-3-1): Herve Koffi (GK); Driver Machado, Facundo Medina, Kevin Danso, Przemyslaw Frankowski; Andy Diouf, Adrien Thamasson; Anass Zaroury, Angelo Fulgini, Florian Sotoca; M’Bala Nzola.
Lens have been consistently patchy through the season, and have never truly been able to string a run of positive results together.
Their best run of the campaign came at the very beginning, when they won three games straight out of the gates, although one of these was a Conference League qualification tie against Greek side Panathinaikos.
However, recently they have put together a similar run, winning three and drawing a further two in their last six games. Although most of these came against lesser sides, this new found consistency will have given a much needed morale boost to the squad ahead of such a prestigious fixture.
PSG Predicted Lineup (4-3-3): Gianliugi Donnarumma (GK); Nuno Mendes, Lucas Hernandez, Lucas Beraldo, Achraf Hakimi; Fabian Ruiz, Vitinha, Kang-In Lee; Bradley Barcola; Goncalo Ramos, Ousmane Dembele.
PSG are very much a side that is in flow state right now. Beating whichever domestic side is put in front of them, they are looking virtually guaranteed to bag their 11th Ligue 1 title in 13 seasons.
Their two have been at the centre of their title assault. Barcola and Dembele have 10 league goals apiece, and have been the sides two most consistent performers over the course of the campaign. Faced with opposition such as Lens, Dembele and Barcola will be licking their lips at the prospect of trying to breach one of the league's finest defences.
With a fit squad apart from the absence of Marquinhos, PSG will know they are heavy favourites going into this one. However, they will have to beware of complacency.
Recent Meetings:
While PSG are used to entering a match as favourites, Lens are a tricky team to beat at the best of times. Qualifying for the Champions League in 2022/23, they showed they are more than just another mid-table French club.
They also have a quality manager in Will Still, and we think his side will surprise critics by stealing a draw against the French juggernauts.
Lens 1-1 PSG
Similar to their ultimately unsuccessful cup game, Lens will score first, and PSG will strike back shortly after. However, with no penalties to break the tie, Lens will pick a valuable point here, which could move them into the top six if Lyon against Toulouse.
