Lincoln City

Lincoln have being playing great at the start of this League One season, following a steady progression through their final league table positions. Since their 17th place in the 2021/22 season, Lincoln have ended the season in 11th and 7th. At the rate their going, promotion seems very likely. As of right now the are in fourth, just a point behind the top three. They got there by beating Burton Albion away from home 2-3 on opening weekend. That win was followed by a 1-2 loss against Barnsley but Lincoln have gone on to win their next two games after that, a 4-1 thrashing versus Mansfield Town and a 0-1 win facing up with Stevenage.

It hasn’t been too long since Lincoln won this competition now. Victors of the 2017/18 edition that saw them beat Shrewsbury Town 0-1. Chesterfield, Lincoln’s opponents in this EFL Trophy match have not played against each other in a while. Seven years since the last time these sides were in the same league and Lincoln did the double over them. The first clash of that season Lincoln won 2-1 at home and in the reverse fixture Chesterfield lost 1-3 at home. Lincoln will look to extend that winning streak that they have going on at the moment and against Chesterfield as well.

Like their opponents, The Spireites have had their hands on this competition’s trophy in seasons past. The 2010/11 edition when Chesterfield won but they have been back to the Final since, Peterborough their challengers just two seasons after winning. Unfortunately, they couldn’t repeat the trick, being defeated 1-3. Now that they are back in the competition, Chesterfield will give it their all to try and reach the heights that they reached 14 years ago.
