Liverpool will look to extend their perfect start to this season’s Champions League when they host current holders Real Madrid at Anfield on Wednesday. Liverpool are two points clear at the top of the Champions League table, however Real Madrid will pose their first major test this year.
Liverpool’s start to the Arne Slot era has gone excellently well. So far they have lost just once in all competitions against Nottingham Forest. Their last match almost ended in disappointment, but Mohamed Salah scored a late penalty to help them to a 3-2 victory over Southampton.
Real Madrid have actually been pretty good in the league, having lost just once, however they have drawn three games. Two of them came right at the start of the season, so it looks as if they have hit a bit of league form. The same cannot be said about the Champions League as they have lost to both AC Milan and Lille.
Liverpool Predicted Lineup - Caoimhin Kelleher; Kostantinos Tsimikas, Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Conor Bradley; Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai; Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah
Liverpool have a couple of injury concerns heading into this game. Trent Alexander-Arnold was subbed off before the international break with an injury and didn’t return for the game against Southampton at the weekend while Harvey Elliot has been missing for a lot of the season.
Mohamed Salah will always be Liverpool’s biggest threat, however Dominik Szoboszlai could look to add to his season’s total having scored his first Premier League goal of the season at the weekend. While he was at RB Leipzig his goal scoring output was consistently one of the highest for a Bundesliga midfielder however we are yet to see much of that at Liverpool.
Real Madrid Predicted Lineup - Thibaut Courtois; Ferland Mendy, Antonio Rudiger, Raul Asencio, Federico Valverde; Jude Bellingham, Luka Modric, Eduardo Camavinga, Arda Guler; Kylian Mbappe, Endrick
Real Madrid have an incredibly long injury list and Vinicius Jr. has just been added to it. In defence they are missing Eder Militao, David Alaba, Dani Carvajal and Lucas Vazquez which is essentially their starting back four. They are also missing Aurelian Tchouameni and Rodrygo amongst others.
Kylian Mbappe was their marquee signing last summer, but he has started this season slowly. He managed to get back on the score sheet at the weekend, but Liverpool will pose a very different problem than Leganes.
Liverpool have a really poor record against Real Madrid, having not beaten them since 2009. Since then, they have played eight times and lost seven. Two of these included Champions League finals in 2018 and 2022.
The last time these two met at Anfield, goals from Vinicius Jr, Karim Benzema and Eder Militao helped Real to a 5-2 win. They then won the reverse fixture 1-0.
15th Mar 2023 - Real Madrid 1-0 Liverpool - UEFA Champions League
21st Mar 2023 - Liverpool 2-5 Real Madrid - UEFA Champions League
28th May 2022 - Liverpool 0-1 Real Madrid - UEFA Champions League
14th Apr 2021 - Liverpool 0-0 Real Madrid - UEFA Champions League
6th Apr 2021 - Real Madrid 3-1 Liverpool - UEFA Champions League
Despite recent history, everything points to a Liverpool win here. It is their first big European game at Anfield this season and they are in excellent form. On top of that, Real Madrid come into the match with a whole host of injuries. If Liverpool don’t walk away with three points, questions will be asked.
With all of this in mind, our team of professional experts have decided that the best tip for this game is for Liverpool to Win. Odds of 10/11 on QuinnBet means that a £10 bet could see a potential return of £19.09.
