Last WSL season's runner-up Manchester City will be looking to go one better this season, and have made a good start towards that goal by sitting top after three games.
Their next game sees them take on a talented but inconsistent Liverpool side who sit fifth in the table, an excellent litmus test for those who want to see how Manchester City deal with high-caliber opposition this season.
Manchester City dominated this fixture last season, but Liverpool are undefeated thus far this campaign, and the Cityzens will need to be on their game to continue their upward momentum.
As the game approaches, here is everything you need to know about both sides ahead of kick-off.
Manchester City Predicted Lineup (4-3-3): Ayaka Yamashita (GK); Naomi Layzell, Alex Greenwood, Laia Aleixandri, Kerstin Casparij; Vivianne Miedema, Yui Hasegawa, Jessica Park, Lauren Hemp, Khadija Shaw, Aoba Fujino.
Manchester City have started the season in golden form. While they drew to Arsenal on the opening day, they have since comfortably beaten Brighton and West Ham, conceding none, and cementing their place at the top of table, although Chelsea sit a point behind them with a game in hand.
They have also made excellent headway in the Champions League, winning their two legged qualifying tie against Paris FC 8-0 on aggregate, before winning their first group game against Barcelona 2-0.
They have looked an ominous opposition for all who have come before them, but liverpool will stand a stern test, so it will be important for City not to underestimate their adversaries.
Liverpool Predicted Lineup (3-5-2): Rachel Laws (GK); Jasmine Matthews, Gemma Bonner, Cornelia Kapocs; Taylor Hinds, Sofie Lundgaard, Fuka Nagano, Marie Therese Hobinger, Lucy Parry; Sophie Haug, Olivia Smith.
While they haven’t been in the same rich vein of form as Manchester City, Liverpool have been largely effective in how they have performed this season.
They drew their first two league games of the season, 1-1 to Leicester City and West Ham respectively, before suffering defeat in the opening round of the league cup to Manchester United.
However, they got their first win of the season away to Spurs thanks to a Marie Therese Hobinger penalty in the fifth minute of added time to grab a last gasp 3-2 win. That result put them fourth in the table and without defeat, although if they are to excel this season, they will need to start comfortably beating teams such as West Ham and Leicester.
Recent meetings:
Historical Head to Head - Liverpool: 4. Drawn: 2. Manchester City: 14.
This has been a particularly high scoring fixture recently, with five or more goals in each of the last three editions.
However, it’s bad news for Liverpool, as 13 out of the 18 goals in total have gone Manchester City’s way, and they will need to find an as of yet elusive solution to limiting a talented City attack.
City will win this one, and there will likely be plenty of goals. Their head to head record speaks for itself, and I can only see City making it an even more one sided CV.
Manchester City 3-1 Liverpool
With world renowned talent all over the pitch, such as Bunny Shaw, Lauren Hemp, Alex Greenwood and Vivianne Miedemia, City have far better squad depth across the pitch, and will dominate in all thirds of the pitch.
Liverpool will have to rely on rare counter-attacking opportunities to try and hit back, but with City controlling the tempo and creating the majority of the chances, the final result seems elementary.
