Old Trafford will play host to the final Premier League game of 2024 as Newcastle will make the trip across to face off against Manchester United. Newcastle will be looking to continue in winning ways and keep hold of their Europa League spot going into the New Year. Looking to leave this year behind, Manchester United will be hoping to try and end a very sour year on a high.
Manchester United have been all over the place in their Premier League campaign and hopefully a new year can result in a fresh start for Ruben Amorim and his side. Dropping all the way to 14th place, they will be looking to bounce back after losing 2-0 in their last game against relegation-battling Wolverhampton.
Eddie Howe will be delighted with how his team have performed so far. Netting a massive 16 goals in their last 5 games and are enjoying a four-game winning streak across all competitions. Although goalkeeper Nick Pope is out with injury, Newcastle have two clean sheets from their last two games.
Formation: 3-4-2-1
Predicted Line-Up: Andre Onana; Lisandro Martinez, Matthijs De Ligt, Leny Yoro; Diogo Dalot, Casemiro, Kobbie Mainoo, Noussair Mazraoui; Alejandro Garnacho, Amad Diallo; Rasmus Hojlund
Ruben Amorim has some serious thinking to do as captain Bruno Fernandes picked up a red card in their 2-0 defeat to Wolverhampton meaning he will have to sit on the side for this one. Also unavailable through suspension, Uruguayan midfielder Manuel Ugarte will have to miss the last Old Trafford game of the year.
Ever-growing concerns are looming over Marcus Rashford being left out of the team completely for the last 3 games, but with manager assuring them it is “nothing personal”, you cannot help but worry what is going on with Manchesters golden boy. Hopefully, Manchester United can find a way to ensure they go into the new year on a positive front and can focus all their attention on rebuilding further in 2025.
Formation: 4-3-3
Predicted Line Up: Martin Dúbravka; Lewis Hall, Dan Burn, Fabian Schär, Kieran Tripper; Joelinton, Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guirmarães; Anthony Gordon, Alexander Isak, Jacob Murphy
With four wins from their last five, Eddie Howe’s Newcastle are making another strong campaign in their fight for Champions League football. With draws to Manchester City and Liverpool while also beating Arsenal, The Magpies have certainly showed they can hold their own against the big teams of the league this season.
Martin Dúbravka has done a brilliant job to fill the boots of injured goalkeeper Nick Pope, only conceding one goal across the three games he has played so far. Playing against his former club, he will be looking to show off the brilliance he never got to show the United fans in their colours. Alexander Isak is also one to look for as he has been deadly for Newcastle so far this season, already racking up 14 goals in his campaign and he is far from done.
The last time these two clubs faced off against each other at Old Trafford, it was the home side that came away with a hard-fought 3-2 victory with Danish Striker Rasmus Hojlund finishing Newcastle off. Anthony Gordon has found the back of the net in the last two fixtures between the two sides, and he will be looking for the same again.
With Manchester United spiralling out of control, and Newcastle playing an attractive brand of football, this game has the Magpies written all over it
For that reason, our betting experts say that Newcastle to win and Alexander Isak to score anytime is the best value tip for this game. Odds of 16/5 would mean that a bet of £10 could see a return of up to £42.
(odds subject to change)
Manchester United 1-3 Newcastle
We can see this game getting quite ugly for Manchester United. Hopefully, a poor result against Newcastle will be what they need to kick them into gear as the new year approaches.
