Wimbledon will have the opportunity to move to second in League Two when they take part in one of the two early kick-offs on Saturday, and will be faced with a stuttering MK Dons side that will invite them to do exactly that.
The hosts are a side that have just three clean sheets in the league all season, and with Wimbledon able to boast the second best positive goal difference in the league, the Dons could well be in for 90 minutes of defensive training.
The away side come into this one having won three games on the bounce, and posed with such a shaky defence, will fancy their chances at extending that run.
As the game approaches, here is everything you need to know about both sides ahead of kick-off.
MK Dons Predicted Lineup (3-4-2-1): Craig MacGillivray (GK); Sam Sherring, Nico Lawrence, Luke Offord; Joe White, Kane Thompson-Sommers, Jay Williams, Aaron Nemane; Daniel Crowley, Tommi O’Reilly; Scott Hogan.
While they haven’t strayed near the relegation zone since the early stages of the season, MK Dons form will be causing concern amongst the ranks, both in terms of players and fans.
They have won just two of their last nine games, and with just one draw sandwiched between those, have failed to pick up considerable points for the most part. The heart of the problem can be blamed on their defence.
In those nine games, they have conceded 18 times, at a ratio of two a game, and to compound this, they have netted just 11 times. Lacking confidence in attack, and totally bereft of any in defence, we don’t see them picking anything up here.
AFC Wimbledon Predicted Lineup (3-4-2-1): Owen Goodman (GK); Ryan Johnson, Sam Hutchinson, Joe Lewis; James Tilley, Jake Reeves, Alistair Smith, Josh Neufville; Josh Kelly, Mathew Stevens; Joe Pigott.
In recent weeks, AFC Wimbledon have confirmed themselves as certified title contenders. Beating Gillingham, Newport County and Tranmere Rovers in their last three games, they have started to pick up points in the games they expected to, a stark contrast to the start of the season, where they gave away cheap defeats.
Mathew Stevens has been at the heart of this good form. Scoring in two of their last three, and sitting second in the golden boot rankings with 13 in total, his form in front of goal has helped Wimbledon into the promotion conversation.
While they do have some more challenging fixtures coming up which will truly test their mettle, Wimbledon will be focusing on the here and now, and as long as they can pick up another three points, they can head to Crewe Alexandra next week with optimism.
Recent Meetings:
Wimbledon will arrive in Milton Keynes as favourites, as even though Dons are a mid-table side, they have forgotten how to play like one. If they can rediscover some scoring form, they may make it a contest, but we are backing a Wimbledon win here.
MK Dons 0-2 AFC Wimbledon
Wimbledon will temporarily move second with a win, and provided Port Vale and Crewe Alexandra both lose, they will stay there. Even so, they have two game on both of them, so should they go back to fourth by the end of the weekend, they have plenty of time to retake second place.
