Two of the biggest teams in French footballing history will butt heads once more this Sunday as visitors Marseille aim to keep closing in on league leaders PSG. Hosts Lyon will have their say and try and put themselves closer to the fight for the European places.
Marseille look like the could properly challenge for the Ligue 1 title this season now that PSG have lost most, if not all of their superstars that they had collected over the years. They are currently firing on all cylinders having won three games and drawn one.
Playing a huge role in that is former Manchester United youngster Mason Greenwood, who joined the team in the summer and has already scored five goals this campaign. A brace in his debut was clearly a sign of what’s to come.
Predicted Line-Up: Perri; Mata, Caleta-Car, Niakhate; Maitland-Niles, Caqueret, Matic, Tolisso, Abner; Orban, Lacazette
It’s another disappointing start to the season for Lyon as they currently sit in 13th place. They kicked off the season with back to back losses, 3-0 away from home to Rennes and then a 0-2 home defeat to Monaco. Still yet to score, they pulled together and found the back of the net four times to please the home fans in a thrilling 4-3 win over Strasbourg. Les Gones started an unbeaten streak with their most recent result, a goalless draw against RC Lens.
Lyon have the joint third worst goal difference in the league with minus four so they will need to improve defensively if they want to stand any chance against this Marseille team that have scored 12 goals domestically.
If they can’t do that, they can try to rely on their attack. Gift Orban is their top scorer so far with two goals but someone you can never count out is captain Alexandre Lacazette who bagged an impressive 19 goals last season, sharing second in the Golden Boot race with Lille’s Jonathan David. The pair of them were only second to Kylian Mbappé so they can be excused for not winning that.
Predicted Line-Up: Rulli; Rongier, Balerdi, Brassier, Murillo; Kondogbia, Hojbjerg; Greenwood, Harit, Luis Henrique; Maupay
Marseille are in flying form at the moment and looking the Marseille of old. Last seasons eighth place finish is something that they are putting past them as they have won three and draw one in the opening four games. Those results have them in second place. They thrashed Brest 1-5 away from home in their first match back before then drawing 2-2 to Reims. The next two games saw them pick up six points with 1-3 and 2-0 victories against Toulouse and Nice respectively.
As we mentioned earlier, Mason Greenwood has been key for them, and he is responsible for five of Marseille’s 12 goals so far. The Phocaeans have managed to collect an exciting bunch of players this season, especially in the attacking department after Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang left to join the Saudi Pro League.
Neal Maupay, Elye Wahi, Jonathan Rowe and Adrien Rabiot have all been new additions and any one of them could play a part in Marseille’s aim to beat Lyon and furthermore a potential title charge.
There has been 123 matches where these two teams have faced each other throughout history.
It might be Lyon that have the advantage as they have won 43 of those games but it is close in the other two stats. Marseille have won 39 times, and a draw has occurred 41 times.
The last five faceoffs have been split in Marseille’s favour, winning three times to Lyon’s two. Marseille are in a great position to improve on their record and close the gap of four wins.

Olympique Lyonnais 1-3 Olympique Marseille
Derby matches can often bring an unpredictability, but Marseille have been putting on amazing goalscoring displays as of late and that’s why we can’t see them losing in this one.
What we can see though is that Lyon could grab a goal purely because they have one of the best established Ligue 1 strikers on the pitch in Lacazette.
