This Sunday’s FA Cup clash sees Liverpool make the trip to face Plymouth Argyle at Home Park. This is a big match for the home side as they have the massive challenge of trying to knockout Premier League opposition to stay in the competition.
Liverpool come into this game in great form across their last five games, losing once out their last five matches when they fielded a weakened side in their final UEFA Champions League table format match. Plymouth Argyle on the other hand have been hit and miss. They have won once, lost twice and drawn twice over their most recent five matches. It isn’t just lower league opposition that are scared of Liverpool but fellow Premier League sides as well and with good reason. This Sunday just seems like too much for Plymouth Argle.
Formation: 3-4-2-1
Predicted Line-Up: Conor Hazard; Maksym Taloverov, Nikola Katic, Julio Pleguezulo; Tymoteusz Puchacz, Jordan Houghton, Adam Randell, Matthew Sorinola; Callum Wright, Michael Baidoo; Mustapha Bundu
Plymouth Argyle have had an abysmal first half to their Championship campaign, finding themselves inside the relegation zone, rock bottom of the table. After 30 games they sit in 24th with five wins, 15 losses and 10 draws. Those results have left them with 25 points, two points behind fellow drop zone teams Derby County and Luton Town. Plymouth made their way into the Fourth Round of the FA Cup in a shock win, beating Premier League side Brentford 0-1 away from home, leaving it as late as the 81st minute. Winger/attacking midfielder Morgan Whittaker was responsible for that goal but he has since left the club in a move to Middlesbrough. Striker Mustapha Bundu that has been the one to step up for Argyle domestically this season amongst a massively struggling scoring squad. The 27 year old from Sierra Leone has contributed to six goals in the 21 matches he’s featured in, only starting just over half of them. Mustapha will most likely be the best attacking threats for Plymouth Argyle against Premier League opposition this Sunday, a tough ask for them to beat but anything is possible in the FA Cup.
Formation: 4-3-3
Predicted Line-Up: Caoimhín Kelleher; Kostantinos Tsimikas, Wataru Endo, Jarrell Quansah, Conor Bradley; Curtis Jones, Tyler Morton, Harvey Elliott; Rio Ngumoha, Darwin Núñez, Federico Chiesa
Unlike their opponents, Liverpool have had an phenomenal first half of the season in their respective league and on a European scale, finding themselves top of the Premier League and finishing the new UEFA Champions Leage format top of that too. After 23 games they sit in first place with 17 wins, just the one loss and five draws. Those results have left them with 56 points, six points clear of their closest challengers Arsenal and having a game in hand on them. Liverpool made their way into the Fourth Round of the FA Cup by seeing off League Two side Accrington Stanley in a 4-0 thrashing with goals curtesy of Diogo Jota, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jayden Danns and a debut goal for Federico Chiesa. Those goals make them the top scorers for The Reds in the FA Cup but domestically in the Premier League and it is Mohamed Salah that occupies that spot, towering over his teammates. The Egyptian has amassed 34 goal involvements so far this season, split into 21 goals and 13 assists, all in the league alone. He is one of the main reasons as to why Liverpool are doing as well as they are under new manager Arne Slot. Though he might not start to give him a rest after Thursday’s win over Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup, Salah is a difference maker whenever he steps onto the pitch, even if that is as a sub.
This is the first official meeting between these clubs since all the way back in 2017 when they met in this same competition. Plymouth managed to take Liverpool to a replay but fell in the second leg. Taking recent form and gap between divisions into account and it looks likely that Liverpool will breeze past Argyle to secure their place into the Fifth Round of the FA Cup.
Liverpool are playing like the best team in the world as proven by their performances in the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League. Though a weakened side is likely to be fielded, they are still capable of beat a poor Plymouth Argle team.
