We are approaching the end of the league phase of this season’s UEFA Europa League and the games are getting tastier. Both Porto and Olympiacos are in good positions to qualify for the playoffs, but will be looking to get a few more points in their next two matches to secure that position.
Porto have been struggling a little bit as of late, having not won any of their last three games in all competitions, including a defeat in the Semi-Final of the domestic cup against Sporting. They now sit third in the league, four points of Sporting in first. Their last European game was a 2-0 victory over Danish side Midtjylland in December.
Olympiacos are having a much smoother season, especially domestically. They are four points clear at the top of the Greek Super League, having lost just twice all season, and have won four in a row in the league. Their last match in the Europa League was a 0-0 draw at home to FC Twente.
Porto Predicted Lineup - Diogo Costa; Zaidu Sanusi, Otavio, Nehuen Perez, Martim Fernandes; Galeno, Stephen Eustaquio, Alan Varela, Pepe; Danny Namaso, Samu Omorodion
Porto have had some injury concerns recently that have forced them to play players out of their natural positions and even change formation at times, but that looks to be mostly behind them now. They have incredible depth on the wing so it is difficult to predict who will start on both flanks. Samu Omorodion will definitely start up top, having scored 13 goals in 15 league games this season as well as netting five in six in Europe. He joined from Atletico Madrid in the summer and has already become a fan favourite in Portugal.
Olympiacos Predicted Lineup - Konstantinos Tzolakis; Francisco Ortega, Lorenzo Pirola, Panagiotis Retsos, Rodinei; Christos Mouzakitis, Santiago Hezze; Willian, Charalampos Kostoulas, Gelson Martins; Ayoub El Kaabi
Olympiacos are in a rich vein of form and their defense has been astute all season, especially in Europe. They have a strong spine with a mixture of youth and experience in their line up that makes them a force to be reckoned with. Ayoub El Kaabi has been outstanding in the league this season with 13 goals and three assists in 19 matches. The club have only scored five times in the Europa League this season, but he has four of them.
These two clubs have met just once before in European competitions. This was in 2020 when no fans were present in the stadiums due to COVID. Porto won both games in the group stage 2-0 but I doubt that it will be that simple this time around, as Olympiacos are in good form at the moment while Porto are not.
9th Dec 2020 - Olympiacos 0-2 Porto - UEFA Champions League
27th Oct 2020 - Porto 2-0 Olympiacos - UEFA Champions League
This will probably be a tight game. For all of Porto’s recent struggles, they tend to overperform in Europe, especially at home, so it will be unsurprising if they put on a show here. However the stats suggest that that is unlikely as Olympiacos have one of the best defensive records in the Europa League this season. If they manage to keep that up this week, and find El Kaabi up top, they could damage Porto.
With all of this in mind, our team of professional experts have decided that the best tip for this game is for a Full Time Draw. Odds of 3/1 on CopyBet means that a £10 bet could see a potential return of £41.
