This Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League action sees Liverpool make the trip to face PSV Eindhoven at the Philips Stadion. This is a big match for the away side as they are unconfirmed to make it into the Round of 16 Playoffs with the new format.
Both teams come into this game in great form across their last five games in all competitions. Liverpool haven’t been beaten in that time frame, coming off the back of a 4-0 thrashing against Ipswich Town on Saturday. PSV Eindhoven have had a nervy couple of games, losing twice in their last five Eredivisie matches. They need to be at their best this Wednesday as any other result than a win means that they could be eliminated from the tournament. Liverpool are comfortably through but that doesn’t mean that they won’t want to go out on a high, winning all eight games. This Wednesday looks set up to be an exciting game with something on the line for both sides.
Formation: 4-2-3-1
Predicted Line-Up: Walter Benítez; Mauro Júnior, Olivier Boscagli, Armando Obispo, Richard Ledezma; Joey Veerman, Jerdy Schouten; Noa Lang, Guus Til, Johan Bakayoko; Luke de Jong
PSV Eindhoven have had a bit of poor UEFA Champions League in this year’s edition, residing inside the Round of 16 Playoff places, but there is potential that they will dumped out of the competition if they fail to pick up a result thanks to its new format. After seven games they sit in 19th place with three wins, two losses and two draws. Those results have left them with 11 points, one point ahead of the last Playoff place so the tough challenge of achieving a win is crucial for them to be in with a chance of making it into the knockout rounds. In the goals for Boeren has been Bayern Munich loanee Malik Tillman. He is responsible for five goal contributions, split into three goals and two assists. In the Eredivisie and it is club captain Luke de Jong and attacking midfielder Guus Til who have both racked up 14 goal contributions each for the Dutch outfit. Only FC Twente’s Sem Steijn has put up better numbers then the pair of them. All the PSV fans will be hoping that de Jong, Til and the rest of the squad can translate that domestic form into the UEFA Champions League this Wednesday, giving them the chance of proceeding into the Round of 16.
Formation: 4-2-3-1
Predicted Line-Up: Alisson; Andy Robertson, Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konaté, Trent Alexander-Arnold; Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch; Cody Gakpo, Dominik Szoboszlai, Mohamed Salah; Luis Díaz
Unlike their opponents, Liverpool City have had a phenomenal UEFA Champions League campaign, finding themselves unbeaten and automatically qualified for the Round of 16. After seven games they sit in first place with seven wins, no losses or draws. Those results have left them with 21 points, three points clear of second places FC Barcelona. They are a whopping 17 teams and 10 points between them and opponents PSV Eindhoven. Stepping up in the UEFA Champions League this season for The Reds has been the one and only, Mohamed Salah, having a Balon D’or worthy season. In seven games, the Egyptian has found the back of the net three times, accompanied with four assists. It is not just in this competition either as his efforts against Ipswich Town on Sunday helped him reach 19 goals and 13 assists in the Premier League, truly astonishing numbers. Mo and the rest of the front line have been mightily impressive but maybe going under the radar are the performances of the back line. Through the seven games so far, Liverpool have conceded two goals, the second best in the UEFA Champions League, only behind Inter Milan’s one. The whole of the Liverpool squad could be the difference makers Wednesday in an attempt to restore Liverpool’s glory in Europe once more.
This is the first official meeting between these clubs so neither side have a historical advantage over the other. Taking recent form into account and it looks likely that there will be a handful of goals in this first ever clash.
PSV are in desperate need for a win in this one whilst Liverpool already have 21 points and sit top of the league. Three points won’t be enough for PSV to earn an automatic pass into the Round of 16 but they have a chance with the Playoff spots. There are important upcoming games for Liverpool so resting key players might be on Arne Slot’s mind, those changes allowing PSV to have a better chance of picking up a result.
For that reason, our betting experts have gone with Draw as our best value tip for this game.
